General Overview:

The overall function of this position is to assist the Project Engineer in the activities of the Project Engineer's office located in District 62, Unit 200, in Abita Springs, by engaging in construction inspection and supervision duties. This position is responsible for assuring high quality construction work in accordance with plans, specifications, and contract provisions.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

30% Prepares and assists in the preparation of: daily diaries, weekly reports, field book record keeping, change orders, partial and final estimates, 2059 reports, errors, and omissions reports, storm water inspection reports and project finalizations.

25% Oversees and performs construction surveys. Computes and/or checks construction quantities prepared by Engineering Technicians including but not limited to: earthwork, field book accuracy, benchmark verification, survey data, and other required data necessary to ensure it meets the requirements of the plans, specifications, and agency special provisions.

20% Collects and records the testing/ sampling of material used on construction projects and verifies acceptable results. Assists and instructs personnel in inspecting for quality control, quantity of materials and the method of production. Monitors and inspects work done by the contractors for compliance with plans and specifications.

10% Assists in leading and training Engineering Technicians performing sub-professional engineering work in the area of construction inspection and surveying to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Incumbent will be required to use independent judgement in planning work and making technical decisions requiring engineering knowledge of a professional nature.

5% Assists in the training of lower-level Engineering Technicians in construction related fields such as: concrete, asphalt, soils, structures, and other construction courses.

5% Review and comment on construction proposals and plans for accuracy of quantities, constructability, and possible issues/ conflicts. Perform any reasonable requested task to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the project engineers office.

5% May be required to perform other additional duties including but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Position-Specific Details:
This position is located in District 62, Unit 200, in Abita Springs. Work schedule varies depending on the construction project you're assigned to. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an Engineering Technician 1 or 2 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Engineering Technician 1 -

Starting salary is $12.22/hourly with an additional $2.00 in premium pay for every hour worked, and an additional $2.00/hour for hours worked between 6 PM - 6 AM on assigned nighttime construction projects.

Engineering Technician 2 -

Starting salary is $14.00/hourly with an additional $2.00 in premium pay for every hour worked, and an additional $2.00/hour for hours worked between 6 PM - 6 AM on assigned nighttime construction projects.

The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as to maintain the following licensing and operate the following equipment:

Valid driver's license

Operate a state owned vehicle, computer, surveying equipment, etc.

Perform duties in extreme weather conditions such as rain, cold, or heat

May be required to lift items up to 50 lbs

Submit to random drug testing as required

This position may be filled as a Probationary Appointment requiring 12-24 months on probation.
