Doug's Underground Service, a MPS Group, Inc. is seeking a skilled and experienced Equipment Operator to join our team in Traverse City, MI. The ideal candidate will be responsible for operating and overseeing directional drilling operations for the installation of underground utilities such as telecommunications, electrical, and water lines. This role will require working with directional bore/drill equipment, cable plows, trenchers, mini excavators and other heavy equipment. A strong focus on safety, precision, and teamwork is a must.

Responsibilities and Job Duties:

  • Operate and oversee directional drilling equipment to install underground utilities with precision and accuracy.
  • Perform drill set-up and ensure proper operation of directional bore/drill equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that may arise during drilling operations.
  • Collaborate with project managers to ensure accurate drilling locations and effective installation.
  • Follow project specifications and work diligently to avoid obstructions and damage to existing underground infrastructure.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections of drilling equipment to maintain optimal performance.
  • Ensure all safety protocols and regulations are followed on-site to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Assist with construction cleanup and other job-site tasks as needed.
  • Participate in trench and manhole operations as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with the team.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in heavy equipment operation, specifically in directional drilling.
  • Proven experience as a Directional Drill Operator/Locator or similar role, with a solid understanding of directional drilling techniques and equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to perform work in various conditions.
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and maps.
  • Familiarity with maintaining and operating directional drilling equipment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and protocols related to directional drilling.
  • Valid CDL Class A driver's license is required.
  • OSHA 10 certification and Operator Qualifications (or ability to obtain).
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.).
