Subsurface Exploration (Drilling) Unit Supervisor

Position Summary

The Subsurface Exploration Supervisor is responsible for directing the activities of the Subsurface Exploration Unit. The Unit provides subsurface exploration information to the Geotechnical Engineering Unit staff. The soils data and samples are used by the engineering staff to make engineering analyses and recommendations for the design and construction of bridges, retaining walls, embankments and other DOT Facilities.

Duties of this position include supervision of the Subsurface Exploration Unit staff and coordination of Consultant services necessary to administer the statewide drilling program. In addition to supervising professional and technical staff, this position coordinates the subsurface exploration unit activities that involve the preparation of weekly work assignments for staff, prioritizing work requests, determining equipment needs at specific work sites, routing crews and equipment to project sites, and coordinating work activities with Region staff members. This supervisory position also monitors crew production and performance, reviews drill data and soil samples, and coordinates operations with the Geotechnical Engineering Unit Supervisor.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (81-30) with an annual salary of $89,440 - $ 94,640, plus excellent benefits. A twelve month probationary period is required.

Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

This position may require independent travel to multiple construction sites.

WisDOT does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

This position offers a hybridized work schedule. The position will be headquartered at and required to work from the Truax office in Madison, WI at least 2 days per week. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview.

Qualifications

A minimally qualified applicant for this position will have experience with all of the following:

  • Experience leading or supervising staff with highly technical and time sensitive responsibilities. This may include ensuring adequate staffing, scheduling, prioritizing and coordinating work to accomplish team objectives with consistently changing and evolving schedules; mentoring, leading and advising others to accomplish work objectives; delegating work; providing performance feedback. Experience may be informal as in a team leadership capacity or in a more formal supervisory role.
  • Experience managing a budget and executing consultant and purchasing processes.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and monitoring of project or program related goals. May include activities such as: conducting research, reviewing existing policy, proposing new policy or policy revisions to management, formulating a plan for policy implementation, communicating policy to partners, conducting training, and conducting follow-up performance measures.
