Essential Job Functions:
The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Install and join pipes for underground utilities; water mains, sewer mains and storm drains
- Handling and/or moving materials
- Backfill pipe trenches
- Rig and set precast structures and pipe materials
- Use hand tools such as cut off saw, wrenches, tampers, pumps lasers, levels.
- Install dewatering systems; sumps, Kelly wells, well points and sock drains
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Functions
Technical Knowledge:
- Effective communication skills
- Identify, report and correct hazards
- Ability to measure, perform construction math and calculate slopes.
- Can set up and properly use a pipe laser and builders level.
- Rigging and hoisting
- Safe trenching
- Understands optimum moisture, densities and compaction requirements
- Use of a torque wrench
- Read and interpret plans, including pipe restraint joint charts
- Proper techniques for joining different types of pipe; push joint, MJ, restrained joints, TR Flex and flanged.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for long periods; handle and manipulate objects on a repetitive basis. Ability to see well and distinguish between back up alarms, voices and other normal sounds consistent with construction job sites. Ability to climb in and out of trenches, ability to lift 80 lbs.
Environmental Adaptability:
Work inside and outside in all weather conditions, and various locations and times of day. Hard hat, hearing and eye protection, Hi-visibility clothing required.
Training and Experience:
- 1 years of utility pipe installation
- Competent Person training
- Confined space training
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Basic Math

- Ability to work independently and self-motivated
- Team player, able to get along with a diverse group of people working towards a common goal
Skill Level 1 Pipelayer
- Recently promoted from Tailman or Hillman
- Knows how to make up pipe joints and install restraint systems
- Can set up pipe laser
- Competent installing force mains
Skill Level 2 Pipelayer
- Can perform at skill level 1, plus
- Knows how to properly bed pipe and achieve passing compaction on backfill
- Can calculate laying lengths, factoring in homing lengths
- Can calculate pipe slopes from a set of drawings
- Competent laying gravity pipe
Skill Level 3 Pipelayer
- Can perform at skill levels 1 and 2, plus
- Does not have pipe leaks
- Knows how to install a well point system
- Knows how to assemble a trench box
- Can properly set and make up meter boxes and services
- Can pre-assemble pipe
- Keeps inventory of pipe, fittings and accessories and knows what is needed 1 week out
- Competent dealing with unsuitable soils
Skill Level 4 Pipelayer
- Can perform at skill levels 1, 2, 3, plus
- Passes TV and laser profiling without any issues
- Completes work with end in mind, zero punch list
- Understand daily production goals and can overcome roadblocks to meet them
- Can work with limited supervision
- Can provide instruction to others
Skill Level 5 Pipelayer
- Can perform at skill levels 1, 2, 3, 4, plus
- Can work without supervision
- Learning how to operate an excavator and could fill in if needed
- Regularly beats production goals
- Team looks to you as a mentor
