Excavator Operator

Essential Job Functions:

The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Safe operation of excavator/backhoe
• Handling and/or moving material
• Knowledge of the excavator/backhoe loading requirements; load charts; critical picks
• Excavate trenches on grade
• Proper backfill procedures around pipe to maintain ovality and to achieve compaction
• Rig, lift, swing and set precast structures and pipe materials
• Safely and efficiently move excavator around the jobsite
• Maintain daily logs of equipment usage, maintenance, etc.
• Daily maintenance of equipment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Functions

Technical Knowledge:

• Effective communication skills
• Identify, report and correct hazards
• Ability to use the controls to effectively operate the excavator/backhoe
• Understands and watches machine control, gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure the machine is working properly.
• Rigging and hoisting
• Safe trenching

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit or stand for long periods; handle and manipulate objects on a repetitive basis. Ability to see well and distinguish between back up alarms, voices and other normal sounds consistent with construction job sites.

Environmental Adaptability:

Work inside and outside in all weather conditions, and various locations and times of day. Hard hat, hearing and eye protection, Hi-visibility clothing required.

Training and Experience:

• 3 years of heavy civil construction equipment operation experience
• Competent Person
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Punctual
• Ability to work independently and self-motivated
• Team player, able to get along with a diverse group of people working towards a common goal

Skill Level 1 Excavator Operator Pipe

• Knows controls and safe operations of large excavators
• Proper inspection of machine
• Can excavate for a trench, can pull grade for pipe installation
• Knows trench safety and how to slope trenches
• Can excavate for shallow utilities

Skill Level 2 Excavator Operator Pipe

• Can perform at skill level 1, plus
• Knows 811 safe dig practices
• Can safely excavate around existing utilities
• Can safely operate the excavate from hand signals
• Can safely load trucks and dispose of excess materials, asphalt debris

Skill Level 3 Excavator Operator Pipe

• Can perform at skill levels 1 and 2, plus
• Can operate any class excavator/backhoe
• Can excavate deep utilities
• Can dig within a trench box and move a trench box
• Can rig, lift and set large precast structures
• Can use an excavator for other uses such as installing well points
• Understand the optimum operating ranging of the excavator
• Understand proper pipelaying methods and can provide over sight to the Pipelayer and Tailman from the excavator

Skill Level 4 Excavator Operator Pipe

• Can perform at skill levels 1, 2, 3, plus
• Can work with limited supervision
• Understand daily production goals and can overcome roadblocks to meet them
• Can provide instruction to others

Skill Level 5 Excavator Operator Pipe

• Can perform at skill levels 1, 2, 3, 4, plus
• Can work without supervision
• Can do anything with an excavator/backhoe
• Regularly beats production goals
• Team looks to you as a mentor
