T he Department of Design and Construction is looking for a Supervising Construction Inspector . Under the direct supervision and direction of the Civil Engineer VI for Construction Field Section B, the primary responsibilities are to provide daily oversight and supervision of all construction inspectors and projects assigned to the section including federally funded projects involving roadways; bridges; drainage; flood control; ADA improvements; and community vision requests in accordance with the contract documents, plans, Standard Details and Specifications, General Conditions, as well as established policies, and procedures.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing daily oversight and supervision of all subordinate construction inspectors and projects assigned to the Section.
  • Responsible for the review of work for completeness, accuracy and timeliness of field inspection reports, project pre-assessment, request for information and project documentation of materials, equipment and labor.
  • Assigns subordinate construction inspector to specific projects based on the complexity and individual capabilities and skills.
  • Provides first-line resolution of conflicts or disputes between inspectors and contractors or subcontractors relative to the materials, methods and procedures used in the various facets of the construction.
  • Advises, recommends or supports the subordinate inspectors and other division personnel with methods and/or sequence of construction, possible changes to plans and specifications that would best meet the field conditions to improve efficiency.
  • Responsible for providing the Performance Evaluation of the subordinate inspectors to the highest authorities within the Branch (Section Head and Branch Chief).
  • Plans, prepares and conducts training for newly hired and existing subordinates; ensures all subordinates obtain/maintain certification under the HDOT Field Sampling and Testing Qualification Program.
  • Performing other related duties.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT :
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :
Two (2) years of experience as a construction inspector at the senior and/or working supervisory level.

  • Knowledge of plans and specifications relating to a wide variety of construction projects.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, assign and review the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications for construction projects.
  • Ability to analyze construction problems and make decisions.
  • Ability to determine the quality of materials and workmanship through inspection and determine compliance with specifications.
QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE :
Having the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as qualifying for the position. Your overall experience must have been of such scope, level and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT :
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license.
(Current vacancy requires a valid Type 3 driver's license, prior to appointment).
