The current vacancy is in the Solid Waste Landfill Division. However, this recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list to fill vacancies Citywide.

Under supervision, operates construction, maintenance, and transportation equipment in a variety of maintenance activities according to required standards. Distinguishing Characteristics:
Equipment Operator in Training:
This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgement in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

Equipment Operator I/II: These are the full journey levels in the class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the OIT level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower level requiring the minimum qualifications, successful performance, budget availability, and management recommendation. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have related experience which allows them to meet the qualifications of the higher level. Examples of Duties

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Operates light, medium, and heavy construction equipment including dump trucks, front loaders, skip loaders, tractors, backhoes, water trucks, bobcats, rollers (large and small), graders, gradealls, street sweepers, D6 and D8 bulldozers.
  • Works with and assists line crew in digging ditches, pole holes, hoisting material, tools, equipment, transformers, and any related work with a backhoe or differ derrick;
  • Operates grader to grade landfill haul roads and tipping pads;
  • Pushes and compacts waste;
  • Separates hazardous materials from refuse;
  • Interacts with representatives from regulatory agencies, drivers and other divisions and departments using the landfill;
  • Inspects, cleans, maintains, and performs minor repairs on equipment and report the need for major repairs;
  • Maintains landfill gas collection system, surface drainage and leachate collection systems;
  • Maintains appropriate records and logs;
  • Assists in training new employees to use tools and power equipment safely and productively; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

When assigned to Street Division:

  • May assist in repairs and patching streets by loading asphalt and raking, shoveling, and rolling asphalt;
  • Assists concrete crew with removing and replacing concrete;
  • Removes graffiti and sign posts with front loader, and graffiti truck truck/pressure washer;
  • Inspects ditches, drainage areas, and roadside shoulders for removal of weeds and application of herbicides and sprays;
  • Assists other departments performing emergency work such as road closures, street failures, and drain work;
  • Hauls soil utilizing a scraper;
  • Covers waste with tarps, green waste and soil in compliance with permit documents and State regulations;
  • Operates skip loader and sorts waste for diversion in the load consolidation area;
  • Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project; and
  • Surveys surrounding work area for proper elevation as per plans.
Qualifications Experience:
Equipment Operator in Training
  • Two years of experience in maintenance and construction work
Equipment Operator I:
  • Three years of experience in maintenance and construction work; and
  • Two years of experience operating heavy equipment.
Equipment Operator II:
  • Four years of experience in maintenance and construction work, including three years of experience operating landfill or street construction/ maintenance heavy equipment.
Education:
Equipment Operator in Training:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
Equipment Operator I/II:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
Licenses and Certificates:
Equipment Operator in Training/Equipment Operator I:
  • Possession of a valid Commercial driver's license with air brake and tank endorsements. (Hazmat endorsement required for positions assigned to the landfill) For landfill positions, all endorsements (air brake, tank, and hazmat must be obtained within 9 months of appointment).
Equipment Operator II:
  • Possession of a valid Commercial driver's license with air brake and tank endorsements. (Hazmat endorsement required for positions assigned to the landfill).
Special Requirements: Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
  • Regularly required to talk or hear. Required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Exposure to outdoors, heat, noise, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
