The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Heavy Equipment Mechanic 2A ) Grade A16 position in the OHM-Garage Management Division . About the Position : This is an entry to full performance skilled mechanic work in the field of matienence repair and service workwherebyincumbents work on a variety of medium to heavy sized motorized diesel vehicles and equipment. The incumbent troubleshoots, diagnoses, effect repairs, performs preventative maintenance and builds and/or replaces parts or components. About the Agency: The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&Ts workforce keeps the Countys various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

Examples of Work
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, drive trains, computerized electronic ignition, fuel/emission systems, suspension and steering related components in both front and rear-wheel drive vehicles, air conditioning, heating and cooling systems, brake systems, and hydraulic systems;

  • Enters pertinent work order data into fleet management software system (FA Suites);

  • Changes, repairs and mounts tires of varying sizes for the departmental heavy equipment and heavy trucking fleet, both in the shop and in the field;

  • Uses standard and/or specialized hand tools/equipment, to include electronic testing systems, hydraulic winches, and lifts, timing lights, voltmeters, and ammeters;

  • Utilizes the most current computer-based diagnostic equipment and service manuals in the analysis of vehicle problems i.e., Texa-diesel diagnostic tool, Tech II (GMC), Pro-Link and refrigerant recovery machines to accurately diagnose vehicle faults;

  • Conducts road repairs;

  • Utilizes welding equipment, brake lathes, tire change/balance machines to complete vehicle repairs and maintenance;

  • Works closely with the Garage Supervisor, Master Mechanic, and Supply Property Clerk to requisition repairs and stock parts;

  • Test drives all vehicles as per current valid license to confirm proper completion of repairs;

  • Participates as an "essential" employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities; and

  • Performs other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.



Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED),
  • Two (2) years of experience/training in the mechanical field servicing, repairing and performing preventative maintenance on a variety of medium to heavy motorized vehicles and equipment and fire and rescue apparatus
An equivalent combination of training, education or experience may also be accepted
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Possess experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines

Conditions of Employment : Upon selection, the candidate must:

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration report that reflects a satisfactory driving record.

  • Within six (6) months of employment, obtain and maintain a CDL Class B license with air brake endorsement.

  • Participate as an "Essential" employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency, or special activities as assigned.

  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.

  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.

  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
