Airport Field Maintenance Superintendent Examples of Duties

Under general supervision, coordinates and oversees the activities of one of the airport maintenance sections including Building Maintenance, Field Maintenance, or Custodial Services. Supervises shift activities and serves as the Manager's back-up in his/her absence. Prioritizes and distributes work orders to section front-line leadership. Assists with developing, managing, and monitoring preventive and other maintenance programs. Orders equipment and supplies, manages requisitions and tallies, and coordinates maintenance activities with outside contractors and City personnel. Assists with developing and implementing policies and procedures. Promotes and ensures compliance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures. Supervises assigned staff's performance. Develops and monitors employee work plans. Counsels, coaches, and instructs employees and prepares performance evaluations. Assists with staff hires, promotions, and disciplines, when appropriate. Promotes and ensures compliance with occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and programs. Performs other job-related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Custodial - A High School Diploma or GED is required. An Associate's Degree in Facilities Management, Real Estate, Hospitality or related discipline from an accredited college or university is required. The equivalent of two (2) years paid full-time experience in housekeeping at an airport, shopping mall, or large hospitality facilities is required. (Substitution: One year of relevant experience may substitute for each year of college education lacking.) Two years of full-time supervisory or team lead experience is also required. A valid State of Ohio Driver's License is required. Proficient oral and written communication skills are required. Certified Housekeeper Executive designation is preferred. Contract preparation knowledge and proficient administrative/computer (Microsoft Office) skills are preferred. Demonstrated ability to manage a large staff at a 24-hour, 7-day a week facility is required. Effective leadership skills are required. Must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds. Field - A High School Diploma or GED is required. Three years of full-time paid property and/or field maintenance supervisory and/or leadership experience which includes landscaping, snow removal, and pavement management, is required, at least two (2) years of related airport experience is preferred. A valid State of Ohio Driver's License is required. Must be able to lift 30 pounds. Contract preparation knowledge and proficient administrative/computer (Microsoft Office) skills are preferred. Building - A High School Diploma or GED is required. Three (3) years of full-time paid facilities and/or building maintenance supervisory experience which includes plumbing, carpentry/masonry, mechanical systems, and painting in a commercial and/or industrial facility is required. Effective communication and leadership skills are required. A valid State of Ohio Driver's License is required. Must be able to lift 30 pounds. Contract preparation knowledge and proficient administrative/computer (Microsoft Office) skills are preferred.

Supplemental Information

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all airfield required repair, maintenance, and related duties to ensure compliance with CFR Title 14 Part 139 certification standards.
  • Reviews work orders, prioritizes work based on operational need, communicates work assignments and deadlines to Unit Leaders and hold teams and individuals accountable to scope and timeline established.
  • Ensures Unit Leaders inspect and evaluate the work of airfield maintenance crews as well as contract work and/or skilled trades work related to airside areas.
  • Reviews Unit Leaders daily/weekly reports noting the status of work assignments implemented.
  • Coordinates and communicates daily priorities, expectations, and assignment details to the Unit Leaders to incorporate each day to their activities.
  • Collaborates with section Unit Leaders to develop Standard Operating Procedures for all work functions within Field Maintenance.
  • Collaborates with Airport Operations on the development of the Snow and Ice Control Plan.
  • Responsible for training the Unit Leaders and workforce on all aspects of tasks to be completed. Training programs include: airfield driving, snow removal circuit routes, deicing chemical usage, heavy duty equipment usage, asphalt and concrete repair/maintenance, landscaping, report writing and computer usage.
  • Coordinate and communicate maintenance activities with other airport sections, the airlines, tenants, vendors, contractors and employees to ensure scope of work and schedule are communicated, to understand potential impacts to airport operations, and to address any questions or issues that may arise.
  • Is responsible for hiring, development and performance of the assigned staff. Develops and monitors employee goals, counsels and coaches, instructs and evaluates employees, initiates and enforces disciplinary actions, and informs the Field Maintenance Manager of performance or operational issues as they arise.
  • Conducts succession planning and develops high performing individuals to prepare them for additional leadership responsibilities that require business continuity (e.g. snow removal circuit routes, protocols and tacit job knowledge).
  • Perform administrative functions including: scheduling overtime, approving benefit time requests, approving security documents and maintaining records as the Authorized Signature Official, developing training materials and presentations, opening, closing and tracking progress in the work order management system, providing written or verbal updates to leadership on projects or section activities.
  • Assists with budget development and is responsible for section procurements including ordering supplies/materials, services and processing payments.
  • Must be willing to work any shift to cover operational needs including nights, weekends and holidays and is to participate in emergency preparedness events and activities.
  • Promotes and ensures compliance with occupational health and safety management policies, procedures, and programs to minimize employee accidents and to promote a safe work environment. Prepares accident and injury reports as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma from an accredited high school program or GED is required.
  • A Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university. (Substitution: Three years of Airport Field Maintenance Unit Leader experience directly related to Cleveland Airport System airfield configurations and Air Traffic Control Tower communications for traversing the runway and taxiway system may substitute for degree.)
  • Three years of fulltime, paid experience in airport field operations.
  • Must obtain Commercial Pesticide Applicator License within six months of hire date.
  • NIMS and ICS certifications for Front Line Supervision tier and any assigned working groups must be completed within six months of employment and complete additional or refresher trainings as required.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment that fosters non-discrimination.
  • Must have strong understanding of FAR Part 139 requirements.
  • Must exhibit strong leadership, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be outgoing and have strong interpersonal and conflict management skills.

  • Must be able to work non-standard work weeks/shifts including holidays within a 24-hour operation in all weather conditions and work overtime during snow removal operations.
  • Must be able to sit in a vehicle for long periods.
  • Must successfully complete all applicable regulatory airfield Ground Vehicle Operator and Winter Operations training/assessments, within probationary period, and maintain corresponding airfield driving privileges throughout employment.
  • Must be able to work in an environment where he/she is exposed to chemicals, exhaust fumes, grass and dust pollutants.
  • Must successfully complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) 10 year fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check and employment background check and Security Threat Assessment.
  • A valid State of Ohio Drivers License is required.
  • Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull ninety (90) pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of the Snow and Ice Control Plan as well as snow removal circuit routes.
  • Experience with best practices of pavement maintenance, repairs and installations.
  • Experience with heavy duty and handheld grounds keeping equipment.
