Summary

Responsible for the operation, repair, maintenance, installation, and replacement of all Lubbock Countys heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems. Must have knowledge in residential and commercial HVAC/R systems including but not limited to: boilers, air and water-cooled chillers, pumps, cooling towers, fan coil units, air handler units, variable air volume units, gas/electric packaged rooftop, direct expansion systems, split systems, exhaust fans, walk-in freezers/refrigerators, ice machines, and all related valves, actuators, and direct digital controls (DDC) systems incorporated with said systems.

Essential Duties
  • Adjust, program, and change HVAC/R and DDC set points for optimum efficiency and occupant comfort.
  • Inspect and analyze installed HVAC components for needed maintenance, repairs, or replacement.
  • Install and calibrate any and all HVAC/R controllers, VFDs, valves and other system components.
  • Perform hydrodynamic and air balancing of HVAC systems as required.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair and install commercial HVAC/R equipment and packaged rooftop units.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical systems including low voltage, line voltage, and 220-480V three phase.
  • Familiarity with HVAC functional design, ductwork sizing, and installation.
  • Perform hydrodynamic and air balancing of HVAC systems as required.
  • Respond to 24-hour emergency calls and provide after-hours overtime work as needed.
  • Responds to emergency situations as required; i.e., fire, medical, terrorist, injuries, bomb threats, breeches of security, and notifying security officers.
  • Assist in identifying system depreciation and failures for to incorporate repairs or replacements into the Departments projected 5-/10-year plan.
  • Complete work orders and daily logs of work performed.
  • Ensure compliance with of all applicable County policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High school graduate (or equivalent) and 5+ years of experience with HVAC/R related systems. Must have their EPA Universal certificate. Must have attended a certified HVAC/R school or vocational college, or through work experience on a one-on-one basis in order to receive HVAC/R certification. NATE, ASHRAE, or ACCA certified is a plus.

Supplemental Information

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Able to read and interpret controls, electrical drawings, blueprints, schematic diagrams, and system operation/installation manuals. Must have an in-depth understanding of HVAC/R systems and knowledge in computerized Energy Management Control Systems to proper diagnose and troubleshoot such systems. Able to organize and prioritize assigned tasks with little to no supervision. Perform mathematical calculations to troubleshoot systems and find faults. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationship with coworkers, contractors, and the public. Proficient understanding of refrigerant cooling, cooling and heating hydronic systems, gas and electric furnaces, heat pumps, walk-in coolers, freezers, and ice machines. Strong understanding of applicable code requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand; use hands to finger motion; handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently bend, stoop, squat, lie down, and walk. The employee must be able to carry, move and climb ladders. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds, such as tools and equipment, and must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds. The employee must follow safety policy, procedures and protocols. The employee must be able to safely use hand and power tools. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. Employee will be required to work in office building and warehouses with standard incandescent and fluorescent lighting, to handle and properly dispose of hazardous chemicals, and work in areas of loud noise. Tolerate outside conditions including exposure to adverse weather conditions. Work in areas of extreme and potentially hazardous noise levels.
