Job Description
Perform all duties normally required in the trade of Electrician, following recognized procedures and techniques for such work, including installing and maintaining electrical systems that operate on alternating or direct current circuits, generators, transformer, and appliances through panels, switches, meters, and circuit breakers; repairing motors and other electrical/electronic controls; and repairing and maintaining electrical switchboards, panels, street lights, household appliances, air conditioners, furnaces, public address systems, alarm systems, and other apparatus utilizing electricity or its effects and other duties as assigned.
This role will champion and be the regulatory entity for all Electrical work performed at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU SOM) as described in the Duties and Responsibilities. This position requires licensure to be an electrician under the State of Illinois and maintain that licensure while an employee with SIU SOM. This position will assist in updating electrical work policies and procedures and assist with writing safety protocol and electrical training for all affected SIU SOM employees.
This position should there be a need to contract any electrical work, will manage and supervise contracted electrical work as it may relate to Capital Projects to ensure the contracted work fits the needs and expectation of SIU SOM.
This position will also oversee all electrical work internally and assist with writing procedural guidelines to maintain compliance for all SIU SOM Facilities. This position will lead and facilitate all electrical work performed by unlicensed Building Operating Engineer Positions. This position will provide and create regulatory matrix needed to meet all electrical standards as described below in the Duties and Responsibilities.
Electrical - Duties and responsibilities: All duties as are consistent with that of a Journeyman
electrician
25% Installs electrical systems that operate on alternating or direct current circuits, generators,
transformers, and appliances through panels, switches, meters, and circuit breakers.
Performs the installation and servicing of electrical equipment and diagnoses problems,
detects and replaces defective parts, tests and adjusts equipment settings as required for
proper operation. Performs the installation and servicing of electrical equipment while
meeting all safety codes. Install and repair wiring, fire alarm systems, telephone, data
transfer wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and equipment. Replace, install, repair and
test electrical circuits, equipment, appliances and lighting systems. Assist with preparing
written procedures involving electrical work, provide predictive maintenance and
preventive maintenance reports and schedules as requested.
25% Execute work orders and follow up on work being performed in designated area of
responsibility and plan details of work procedure, making sketches as required for
complete and usable layout. Analyze all types of drawings, such as wiring
diagrams/schematics, and operating/maintenance manuals to determine material
replacement needs, assembly specifications and methods. Effect the best means of
making repairs to minimize interruption of day-to-day work activities of occupants. Order
parts required for installation, repair and/or maintenance
20% Assist in the repair of facility-related electrical equipment, wiring, lighting, motors, and
devices such as high voltage gear including 12,500/7200, 480/277V, 208/120V, and
various low voltage control devices and systems. Assist in planning, scheduling, and
procurement with some analysis of work procedures and execution rates. Recommend
safety, energy, and process improvements. Coordinate with other electricians and trades
on relevant work orders to effectively execute work requirements. Perform other related
duties as assigned. Participate and assist in additional training as related to the work in
compliance with OSHA and NEC and IBC guidelines and standards.
10% Basic pipe bending and support bracing for field installation. Provide access for future
maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with
specifications and the "National Electrical Code." Design and layout circuits, install
fixtures, wiring conduits, motors, and other electric equipment and components with an
eye for maintenance access and de-confliction with other trades work. Plan new or
modified installations to minimize waste of material. Layout and install complex
electrical power and control wiring installations and other duties as assigned.

10% Locate and mark existing utilities for all internal and external stakeholders per project requirements. Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install, conduit, other electrical raceways and materials using a variety of hand and power tools maintaining appropriate safety precautions.
10% Maintains a small inventory of parts and supplies to maximize operational readiness of university electrical system with due respect to the limitations of cost regulations and relative priorities. Standing by during large-scale operations to insure continual power and electrical support as needed. 1. Must have current electrical License with the State of Illinois or Obtain Licensure within 1 year of Hire. Maintain Illinois Electrical License while employed by SIU SOM
