The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a motivated person to evaluate, pilot, and implement technologies that are transforming transportation operations, including vehicle connectivity, vehicle automation, innovative sensors (LiDAR, etc.), and transportation data analytics. All of these innovations will influence UDOTs vision to Keep Utah Moving. UDOTs ability to harness and encourage these technologies will also be crucial to improving mobility, preventing crashes, and saving lives. UDOT plays a leadership role in these technologies, on a local and a national level, and has specific goals to stay on the cutting edge and bring benefits to Utah travelers. You will be part of an innovative team whose focus is to identify, evaluate and understand these exciting new technologies and put them into practice in beneficial ways, with a specific focus on connected vehicles or vehicle to everything (V2X).

Principal Duties
You work within the Transportation Technology Group to help identify, procure, evaluate, implement, integrate, and promote new technologies in traffic management. Our current focus areas are connected vehicles, readiness for automated vehicles, and innovative sensing technologies, such as LiDAR and fiber sensing. In addition to team brainstorming, strategic thinking, analysis, and coordination with UDOT staff, partners in other government agencies (local and national), and the private sector, you do some or all of the following:
  • Evaluate potential technologies and oversee testing and evaluation.
  • Lead procurement efforts for specific products and technologies.
  • Manage implementation and integration projects (including scoping and managing procurement and consultant contracts, and overseeing V2X installation).
  • Oversee operations, asset management, and maintenance of V2X systems.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders and the public, including giving presentations.
  • Collaborate in a multi-disciplinary and multi-modal arena.
  • Process, analyze, and visualize data to identify trends and system performance.
  • Generate new ideas and approaches.
  • Document processes, progress and results.
  • Become conversant in existing technologies within UDOT, including LiDAR, fiber, traffic signal systems, ITS systems, and traffic management hardware and software.
  • Develop expertise in new technologies, including vehicle automation, vehicle connectivity, wireless communication, data management, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, image recognition, vulnerable road user detection, and sensing.
  • Explain the benefits of successful technologies, promote their use, interact with potential partners and encourage their involvement.
  • Assist in the development of strategic and deployment plans focused on vehicle automation and connectivity.
  • Participate in committees and research panels with public and private sector partners.
  • Assist with the management of federal grants.
  • Participate in the development of standards, specifications, policies and guidelines related to these new technologies.
  • Assist in the review of policy and legislative documents relative to the technologies being tested and implemented by the Transportation Technology Group.

Minimum Qualifications
In order to qualify you must have all of the following:
  • Be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
  • Have at least two (2) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
  • Have curiosity for, and passion about traffic management technologies, including vehicle connectivity, vehicle automation, data analysis and management, sensor systems, and cybersecurity.
  • Be a team player, able to collaborate and communicate with a broad variety of UDOT stakeholders and external partners

Preferences
Preference may be given to those with at least one of the following:
  • Experience with UDOT Consultant Services processes, especially those involving ITS projects, the use of ePM, and project development and approval processes in the Regions.
  • An understanding of, and experience with, UDOT and statewide procurement processes, rules and regulations, including those that deal with electronic equipment and new technologies.
  • Experience with one or more of the following areas: vehicle-to-everything communications systems, wireless radios, data analytics and visualization tools, vehicle or roadside sensors, traffic signal systems, network communications, automated driving systems, cybersecurity or public key infrastructure, or technical standards (such as NTCIP, CTI, IEEE, NEMA, or SAE).

  • Working Conditions - Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Physical Requirements - Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
