Equipment Operator - Transfer (Water Services)

There is currently one position available in the Water Distribution Section, Water Services Division, Public Works Department.

This position involves general maintenance work including operating water system maintenance equipment and power tools. In this role, you'll perform preventive and emergency maintenance on the city's water systems including installing and repairing water mains, hydrants, and service taps. You'll also respond to after-hours emergencies, conduct pressure tests, and locate and repair leaks in the water distribution system.

This position is open to all Equipment Operators in the classified service who have successfully completed their probationary period.

An employee may transfer from one department or division or section to another within such employee's current classification with the approval of the employee's department director. Transfers will be made on the basis of seniority. Requests for transfer must be for reasons other than the elimination of jobs. In no case shall bumping occur because of a transfer. Any employee transferred must successfully complete a three-month probationary period before the transfer is final. An employee who does not complete the probationary period shall be returned to his/her original department or division. During the first month of the probationary period, an employee will be returned to his/her original department or division upon request.

  • Operate heavy equipment, dump trucks, and small public works machinery.
  • Perform preventive and emergency maintenance for the Water Services Division.
  • Maintain water systems by checking for leaks, installing and repairing mains, hydrants, service taps, and curb boxes.
  • Conduct pressure tests and sterilize water mains.
  • Respond to water system emergencies outside of regular hours.
  • Locate and operate water valves and other system components.
  • Investigate and repair water leaks in the distribution system.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs as directed.
  • Supervise and instruct helpers on general maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of tools and materials for water system maintenance.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain public works equipment.
  • Familiarity with water system safety procedures, traffic laws, and Illinois EPA/Plumbing Code regulations.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and communicate effectively with the public.
  • Physical ability to work outdoors in tough weather for extended periods.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings and maps.
