Brief Summary:

Assembles, installs, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of steam, heating, cooling, pneumatic, natural gas, water, and drainage systems by performing the following duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:

This is a skilled level position and employee must be able to perform a wide variety of repairs to ensure that ASNA facilities and residential properties are maintained in a safe and effective working condition. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements, work environment, physical demands, and preferences listed are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

Certification/Licensure:
  • Valid Alaska Drivers License that meets ASNA insurance criteria within ninety (90) days of hire.
  • Valid Journeyman Plumbers License
  • Must be able to obtain licensure in Alaska within six months of hire.

Education & Experience:

  • High School Graduate, or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
  • Experience of not less than three years working as a plumber in industry is also required with five years experience preferred.
  • Knowledge, understanding and the ability to research, read, comprehend and apply applicable codes and ordinances are required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Other duties may be assigned requiring skills of a like or less demanding nature.
  • Studies building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations.
  • Inspects structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.
  • Locates and marks position of pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors.
  • Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.
  • Cuts and threads pipe.
  • Bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand.
  • Assemblers and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic.
  • Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, caulks joints, Victaulic connectors welding, soldering, brazing or other methods as prescribed by supervision or engineering instruction.
  • Fills pipe system with steam, water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking.
  • Installs and repairs building fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and waters softeners. Also, is responsible for steam system equipment such as steam traps, pressure regulators, steam station valves, and other equipment as required.
  • Becomes familiar with hospital medical gas systems including but not limited to compressed air, vacuum, oxygen and nitrous oxide. Can operate these systems as well as maintain and troubleshoot.
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.
  • Welds holding fixtures to steel structural members. Installs pipe hangers and supports.
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment. Maintains tools and equipment in good working condition.
  • Receives company provided training concerning, but not limited to. Lock Out Tag Out, Confined Space Entry, Blood Borne Pathogen, Safety, Accident Reporting and Prevention, and others, and applies this training during working hours as applicable. Reports unsafe working conditions to appropriate level as required.
  • Completes required documentation for both the company and the client in timely manner.
  • Documentation is legible and accurate to the best of the employees knowledge.
  • Works as part of an interdisciplinary team to execute complex repairs and construction projects.
