As an essential member of the Engineering leadership team, the Engineering Supervisor supports the Director of Engineering and Assistant Director of Engineering in the successful day to day operation of the Engineering Division and is responsible for supervising all operations for maintaining the building and grounds. This includes but is not limited to electrical, plumbing, mechanical, steam, gas, fire & safety, HVAC refrigeration, pool, carpentry, landscaping, paint and decorating. The Engineering Supervisor will also coordinate and monitor the guest room, corridor, and public area preventative maintenance programs to ensure the finest facilities for guests and employees.

The Engineering Supervisor will be a role model to all Engineering employees, provide training and development as needed, respond to guest inquiries and problems in an efficient, courteous, and professional manner and create a safe and accident-free environment for our guests and employees.

The Engineering Supervisor is a guest centric leader who possesses excellent judgment and problem resolution skills, is proactive and constantly looks for ways to innovate and enhance the Halekulani guest and employee experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Engineering Operations & Systems

  • Ensures all engineering workshop and storage areas are maintained, organized, clean and sanitized.
  • Assists as needed with inventory of all parts and supplies.

Building Maintenance

  • Maintain complete knowledge of correct maintenance and use of equipment. Use equipment only as intended.
  • Participate in property walkthroughs and inspections to ensure property and facilities always meet and exceed expectations.
  • Ensure the proper operation, maintenance, and repair of all:
  • Heaters, pumps, valves, and lines used in the distribution of steam and heated or processed water.
  • Refrigerant compressors, condensers, evaporators, traps, transfer pumps, expansion valves, stop valves as well as all refrigerant lines and devices used to control temperatures.
  • Air compressors along distribution lines and all valves and devices for air control.
  • Gas and distribution lines, including all valves and control devices.
  • Water filters, softeners, piping, and pumps are used in conjunction with water distribution, including all sinks and toilet bowls, as well as supply lines and water lines.
  • Swimming pool equipment including pumps, filters, and heater.
  • All types of motors or engines are used to power pumps, compressors, and fans.
  • All types of locks, keys, and locksmith related duties.
  • All electrical work and repairs.
  • Carpentry work, and those duties related to carpentry.

Preventative Maintenance

  • Ensures successful execution of preventative maintenance programs of all-building equipment and guestrooms. Facilitates training of the Engineering employees on such programs.

Third Party Vendors

  • Assess repair needs to determine whether work can be handled in-house or needs to be outsourced.
  • Monitor and supervise subcontractors and third-party vendors.

Administration

  • Maintain complete knowledge of and comply with all departmental policies/service procedures/standards.
  • Daily scheduling of duties, projects, and work responsibilities for employees. Conducts follow up walk-throughs to inspect quality and ensure progress or completion.
  • Prepare and adjust weekly work schedules in accordance with employee guidelines and labor forecasts.
  • Adjust work goals and schedules throughout the week to meet the business demands.
  • Monitor overtime and ensure appropriate breaks are being taken.
  • Ensures property policies are administered fairly and consistently.
  • Participates in onboarding program for all new hires.
  • Maintain written standards of department performance expectations.
  • Complete daily shift reports and communicate necessary information with ADOE and DOE
  • Assist in administering legally required employment practices such as performance and aptitude reviews.

Computer systems

  • Ability to maximize use of systems including:
  • HotSOS
  • KeyWatcher
  • Saflok
  • Alerton
  • Additional Systems as necessary

Workplace Safety

  • Knowledge of all fire and life safety systems on property.
  • Enforce safety regulations.
  • Investigate accidents.

Guest Engagement

  • Anticipate guests needs, respond promptly, and acknowledge all guests, regardless of business levels and time of day.
  • Always maintain positive guest relations.
  • Immediately resolves guest complaints, ensuing guest satisfaction.
  • Communicate and partner with all department leaders and hourly employees to ensure the guest experience is personalized and executed seamlessly.

Employee Engagement

  • Foster strong and positive relationships with employees
  • Assist with conducting innovative daily lineups for employees.
  • Upholds Halekulani grooming standards for employees; rectify any deficiencies.
  • Assists with engineering departmental meetings and hotel morning meetings.
  • Upholds Halekulani's Vision and Cultural Values
  • Holds team members accountable for departmental standards.
  • Train engineers in preventive maintenance and equipment use.
  • Conduct ongoing training programs to build the skill levels and competency within the department.
  • Facilitate onboard training and department orientation for new hires.
  • Monitor employee performance and assist with annual reviews for engineering employees.
  • Assist Engineering employee.

Perform all other duties as may be required or assigned.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS

Reports To: Director of Engineering/Assistant Director of Engineering

Supervises: All Engineering Staff

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent vocational training certificate.
  • 4 years' experience in Engineering
  • 2 years' supervisory experience
  • 2 years' experience working in mechanical trades.
  • Previous hospitality experience
  • Any combination of education and experience which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet the minimum qualifications to perform the essential functions of this position.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certification in CPR.
  • Certification in First Aid/AED

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Excellent Leadership Skills.

  • Ensure familiarity with all hotel services to respond to guest inquiries accurately.

  • Able to read, write and communicate in English.

  • Ability to always maintain positive guest relations.

  • Ability to lead employees in a positive manner.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and can multi-task.

  • Knowledgeable of mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, life safety, electrical and carpentry operations.

  • Knowledgeable of chillers, cooling towers, pneumatics, control systems, water systems, boilers, refrigerators, compressors, etc.

  • Working knowledge of:

  • Plumbing codes

  • Electrical codes

  • national/local fire codes

  • State of Hawaii mechanical codes

  • Water treatment program

  • Blueprints and plumbing and wiring schematics

  • Power and hand tools, meters, etc. as it relates to the technical trades

  • Knowledge of all mechanical equipment critical to the operation of the building.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and use alternatives in emergency situations.

  • Ability to instruct/direct staff in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft software applications, Office 365, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
