Job Overview
We are looking for a skilled and experienced Senior Automation Machine Builder to join our Build Floor Department in Wyoming, Michigan. In this hands-on leadership role, you will be responsible for the mechanical assembly, integration, and debug of custom automation systems and robotic machinery. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, high-performance equipment used across a variety of industrial applications.
As a senior team member, you will lead complex builds, mentor junior builders, and collaborate with engineering and controls teams to bring machines from blueprint to fully functioning systems. This position reports directly to the Plant Manager and is critical to the success of our machine build and commissioning operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical assembly and integration of custom-built automation machines and robotic systems.
- Interpret and work from detailed CAD drawings, mechanical schematics, and bills of materials (BOMs).
- Assemble and align components including frames, actuators, conveyors, gearboxes, and robotic arms with precision and care.
- Perform debugging, troubleshooting, and functional testing to ensure optimal mechanical performance.
- Work collaboratively with the controls, electrical, and engineering teams throughout system build and commissioning.
- Guide and mentor junior builders and technicians in best practices, safety, and quality standards.
- Participate in FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and support SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) and customer installations, including some travel.
- Identify and communicate design or assembly improvements to engineering and management teams.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in accordance with company policies and safety regulations.
Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of experience in mechanical assembly and machine building for automation or special machinery.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, pneumatics, servo motors, and industrial components.
- Ability to interpret and work from mechanical drawings, blueprints, and technical documents.
- Experience integrating robotic systems (e.g., FANUC, ABB, YASKAWA) is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership in machine assembly and ability to manage small teams or independent projects.
- Skilled with hand tools, precision measurement instruments, and alignment techniques.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and a hands-on, solutions-oriented approach.
- Willingness to travel occasionally (up to 20%) for machine installs and service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or technical certification in Mechanical Technology, Mechatronics, or related field.
- Familiarity with PLC-based automation systems, robotic programming, and machine safety standards.
- Experience in industries such as automotive, agriculture, military, and mining.
- Relevant certifications in robotics, OSHA safety, or industrial assembly.
