  • &nbsp&nbsp POSITION: Class A Mechanic Boiler Mechanic LOCATION: Operations Department AVAILABLE: 2025/2026 School year COMPENSATION: $33.85 p/hr HOURS: 6:30 am 3:00 pm (Or insert hours) DESCRIPTION: To perform the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of large mass gas or oil fired standard or high-efficiency boilers and related heating and hot water systems, including expansion tanks, pumps, piping, water heaters, backflow preventers, valves, and associated controls. This position works in conjunction with the district plumbing and HVAC trades on water-bearing system projects and collaborates with the Facilities Manager in tracking state inspections and recommending replacements. Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS), including JCI Metasys and Siemens Desigo, is essential for system diagnostics and decision-making.
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    1. Performs mechanical and plumbing tasks on boiler systems including installation, preventative maintenance, repair, and replacement of boilers, burners (e.g., Power Flame), expansion tanks, pumps, water heaters, valves, and backflows.
    2. Installs, maintains, and services large mass gas or oil fired boilers and high-efficiency condensing boilers. Inspects components for wear or malfunction, replaces defective parts, and ensures systems operate efficiently and safely.
    3. Maintains and repairs hydronic heating systems, including circulation pumps, zone valves, air separators, pressure-reducing valves, expansion tanks, mixing valves, and control actuators. Ensures proper water flow, system pressure, and heat distribution throughout the building. Also services domestic hot water piping systems and works jointly with plumbing trades on piping systems involving both potable and non-potable water.
    4. Performs diagnostic reviews using Building Automation Systems (JCI Metasys, Siemens Desigo) to identify equipment performance issues, and determines corrective action. Makes recommendations to the Facilities Manager for replacement or upgrades.
    5. Coordinates with subcontractors on specialized boiler or piping projects when the scope of work exceeds in-house capacity. Inspects work and ensures contractor compliance with district standards.
    6. Maintains inspection schedules and coordinates with state inspectors to ensure compliance for pressure vessels, backflows, and other regulated components.
    7. Supports district HVAC mechanics and plumbers in system-wide operations, contributing to seasonal start-ups, shutdowns, and integrated mechanical troubleshooting.
    8. Uses proper safety procedures and equipment when working with pressurized systems, elevated platforms, confined spaces, and hazardous environments.
    9. Oversees boiler cleaning performed by contractors. Inspects cleanliness and reports any operational concerns and performance deficiencies.
    10. Maintains, repairs, and installs hot water heater systems throughout the district.
    11. Performs inspection of service and construction contracts upon request to ensure compliance with contract documents.

    REQUIREMENTS: Education/Experience:
    To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of education, training, skills, and/or abilities necessary.

    - Trade school diploma or equivalent
    - Minimum seven years experience working with boiler, heating, or mechanical systems in commercial/institutional settings
    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    1. Extensive knowledge of boiler systems, heating system distribution, hot water and domestic piping, pumps, valves, and combustion systems.
    2. Basic working knowledge of plumbing systems and piping principles, including their overlap with heating systems and boiler infrastructure.
    3. Experience with Building Automation Systems (JCI Metasys, Siemens Desigo) for monitoring and troubleshooting of mechanical systems.
    4. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and O&M manuals.
    5. Skilled in the use of hand tools, diagnostic tools, combustion analyzers, and power tools related to boiler maintenance and repair.
    6. Working knowledge of pneumatic and electrical controls as they relate to heating and boiler systems.
    7. Working knowledge of safety protocols, especially as they relate to pressurized systems, confined space entry, and asbestos awareness.
    8. Familiarity with contract oversight responsibilities and the ability to generate compliance reports.
    9. Valid Pennsylvania drivers license and a clean driving record.
    10. Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
    11. Courteous, cooperative, and able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.
    12. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
    13. Proficient in basic math, reading, and writing to complete logs, reports, and calculations.
    14. Capable of communicating effectively through phone, text, and email.
    Physical Demands:
    - Use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools, and controls; ability to speak and hear clearly.
    - Prolonged standing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, bending, climbing, and working in confined or uncomfortable positions.
    - Visual acuity for close inspection and adjustment of mechanical systems.
    - Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
    - Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms as required.
    - Exposure to indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions, high heat, electrical hazards, grease, and debris.
    - Work in areas with asbestos-containing materials using appropriate protective equipment.
