Position: Safety and Health Manager

The Opportunity:
The Safety and Health Manager provides leadership and tactical support for the extrusion platform. The position will be based at the Low Moor Converting Plant with safety oversight also provided for Pointe-Aux-Trembles (PAT), Quebec, Forney, TX and Silsbee, TX plants. Assist the facility by motivating team members and lead a safety-conscious culture in the workplace to prevent injuries. The Manager will work with onsite personnel both salaried and hourly at PAT and Silsbee who will maintain direct responsibility for those sites safety culture, programs, and results.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
- Drive employee engagement with a culture-of-caring focus and discovery-learning safety conversations to identify and mitigate PLCE risks and concerns.
- Support hazard recognition, assessment, and control processes to identify and control physical hazards through on-site inspections and effective employee training and awareness.
- Lead human organizational performance (HOP) events and use of the event learning process for significant incident/near miss investigations and pro for the extrusion platform.
- Develop effective safety communication utilizing various multi-media methods.
- Lead continuous improvement using SES toolkit, self-assessments and audit processes; incident/near miss investigations; metrics, targets, and periodic reviews of performance; culture and talent.
- Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and continual improvement of procedures and programs designed to create a Zero Injury Culture including leading a monthly call with relevant safety and plant personnel from all three extrusion plants to share best practices and learnings.
- Support the implementation of the facilitys annual safety improvement plan and the Smurfit Westrock Safety Excellence System and provide education, support and coaching for PAT and Silsbee locations for their site-specific SES implementations.
- Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, licenses, permits, and ordinances pertaining to health and safety.
- Utilize training and development plans to grow H&S knowledge and skills.
- Establish, facilitate, and support the site safety committees.
- Lead the investigation of incidents, determine root cause factors and implement corrective action to prevent future incidents.
- Develop and improve new and existing job safety analyses for tasks performed at the facility.
- Provide oversight for environmental programs: new chemical approvals, air emissions, stormwater management, wastewater processing, spill prevention and countermeasures, solid/hazardous waste management, and environmental permits and plans.
- Weekend and after hours call duty and support.
- Assist in Return-to-Work strategy implementation.
- Travel up to 15% of the time to support PAT and Silsbee and for training events.
- Responsible that all employees understand and utilize all safety requirements of job functions; in addition to use all required PPE during job tasks.
- Position requires full knowledge of safety requirements and ensure compliance and accountability. Working knowledge all safety procedures (including LOTO, fall protection, confined space entry, hot work and JHA for each position, proper guarding, seat belts, dock locks, etc.).
- Employee must follow standard work procedures and safe work.
What you need to succeed:
- BS degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety and Health or Safety Engineering.
- Experience in Safety/Health Compliance, Leading Culture Change, and Leading Injury & Illness Prevention Systems is desired.
- Knowledge of OSHA General Industry Safety & Heath Standards.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, teambuilding, and influential skills. Ability to engage and inspire co-workers.
- Proficient in the use of computers and associated Microsoft Office software.
- ASP or CSP is a plus
