Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: The Physical Plant Supervisor Senior is responsible for the daily operations, maintenance, and long-term upkeep of all the physical buildings and infrastructure across the facilities. This position requires hands-on expertise in the building trades (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC) and strong leadership abilities to oversee a team of maintenance staff, coordinate outside contractors, and manage capital improvement projects from planning to completion.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Utilize the Facility Dude program to manage maintenance and repairs to all buildings, equipment, and vehicles, located in Lansing Correctional Facility. Perform skilled work in various building trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems. Monitor and manage preventive maintenance programs to extend life of facility assets. Oversee small to mid-size capital improvement and renovation projects, including budget tracking, contractor coordination, inspections, and project timelines. Ensure compliance with all renovation projects, including budges tracking, contractor coordination, inspections, and project timelines. Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and safety standards. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, work orders, inspections, and repairs. Respond to building emergencies during and outside of regular hours as needed. Maintain an inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies; request procurement as needed. Serve as liaison for vendors and contractors on site. Contribute to long-term facility planning and infrastructure improvements.
  • General oversight of the upkeep and inventory of LCF's heavy equipment and state vehicles. Maintain, repair, and inform the DWSS and fiscal about the condition of the facility and needed improvements. Coordinates with other departments by correspondence and regular review of prevention maintenance and work order requests concerning matters relating to maintenance, repair, renovation and new vehicles and equipment.
  • Implements orders, directives, policies and procedures while managing staff and physical plant resources. Indirectly assigns and oversees the work of skilled construction and maintenance personnel and resident workers to assure the maintenance and construction requirements of the institution are completed on schedule and within budget limitations. Evaluates subordinate employees and administers the evaluation process in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Originates and prepares reports by assembling date relative to the maintenance, repair and construction programs to inform the DWSS and other agencies and personnel about the condition of the facility and needed improvements. Coordinate with other departments by correspondence and regular review of work order requests concerning matters relating to maintenance, repair, renovation and new construction.
  • Develops written performance expectations that list major duties and responsibilities of Facilities Maintenance Supervisors and counsels each individual on what performance is expected of them during the rating period. Prepares annually or sooner when directed, a performance evaluation by discussing employee's performance with the employee, and making recommendations in regards to continuous performance in order to inform the employee on what is expected of the employee. Explains how well the employee was doing and making recommendations to the employee on how to improve his performance.
  • Inspects areas of the facility to assure scheduled preventive maintenance will be sufficient for the area or equipment and to note any problems that may need to be addressed with other means. Confer with other physical plant supervisors for updates on projects and/or equipment that needs to be deferred or initiated earlier than schedules suggest.

Qualifications

Licensing & Certification: Driver's License

Minimum Qualifications: Five years of experience in building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services unless the incumbent is moving from safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties. May be required to pass a background check.
