Position Summary
Performs intermediate skilled trades work in electrical maintenance, repair, modification, installation and construction for structures, school buildings, equipment, and facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Facility Operations.

Essential Functions
- Install circuits for machinery and equipment using various wiring techniques.
- Install, repair, and maintain complex electronic/electrical systems in various areas
- Install, repair, and maintain intercoms, sound systems, scoreboards, cameras, televisions, telephone systems etc.
- Install & replace electrical equipment, wiring, breakers, switches, receptacles, controls, motors, light sources, etc.
- Troubleshoot system failures, assess and analyze maintenance and repair needs.
- Install school traffic lights, power connections, and cables.
- Use a variety of standard and special electrician tools and test equipment.
- Prepare reports, work orders, timesheets, logs and records as required.
- Design projects, prepare estimates and purchase material.
- Assist in repair of HVAC/refrigeration equipment for energy efficiency and proper operation.
- Diagnose problems with equipment. Troubleshoot system failures. Assess, analyze, and repair as needed.
- Repair and maintain kitchen and food service equipment.
- Assist other trades as necessary. Perform general maintenance duties such as replacing ceiling tiles, checking and repairing roof leaks etc.
- Perform any other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools and terminology of the electrical field.
- General knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials.
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned trade.
- Skill in the use of tools and equipment.
- Ability to draw and work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications.
- Ability to follow and issue oral and written instructions.
- Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with building staff and associates.
Qualifications, Education and Experience
- Must Possess high school diploma or GED.
- Considerable experience as a skilled tradesperson, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements
- This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
- Work regularly requires speaking and hearing. Work requires handling and feeling of objects. Work frequently requires standing, climbing, balancing, reaching, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, smelling, pushing, pulling, lifting and repetitive motions.
- Work has standard vision requirements. Vocal communication and hearing required for exchanging of ideas.
- Work requires preparing and analyzation of data. Work requires visual inspections, using measuring devices, operating machinery, operating motor vehicles, operation of heavy equipment, and general observational awareness.
- Work frequently requires exposure to wet, dry, humid, hot and cold conditions that are not weather related.
- Work frequently requires exposure to extreme heat and cold that is weather related.
- Working near moving mechanical parts, high and precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, and exposure to vibration.
- Work may require exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may require the use of specialized personal protective equipment.
- Use of standard personal protective equipment.
Special Requirements
- Possession of or ability to obtain Journeyman Electrician and Tradesman licenses upon hire.
- Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the School Board.
- Ability to acquire valid driver’s license to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
