About the Work Unit

The Division of Maintenance & Operations will operate by four main focus points intended to guide management and leadership. The focus points will improve our Level of Service to our customers and develop our staff and work process for the future. The four focus points are:

  • Decision Making : developing decision making tools for Regional Managers and field staff by providing access to data
  • Preservation : Increasing the Departments focus on preservation treatment in our Bridge, Pavement, and Equipment programs
  • Resiliency: advancing the departments resiliency and ability to respond to disasters.
  • Employee Development : developing employee skills sets, with a focus on technology, across the Department to better meet the future demands of transportation.

Purpose : The Maintenance Engineering Unit supports the Maintenance Sections in ensuring the transportation infrastructure advances to and remains in a Good State of Repair. This support is provided in several forms including expertise, facilitation, coordination, and innovation in the development and deployment of Maintenance activities. The Unit also provides technical guidance to various programs in Maintenance and works to develop, analyze, and solve technical issues facing the Maintenance Sections.
The unit focuses on:

  • Statewide preservation programs for bridge, pavement, and water quality control measures
  • Provides support in roadside vegetation management along with water quality
  • Manages the Statewide Maintenance Project program delivering and advising on infrastructure projects
  • Supports the winter operations program including the management of 3rd party liquid and granular testing contracts, approved product specifications for winter materials
  • Oversight of the Managed Lanes maintenance program

About the Position

Maintenance Engineering Project Support-
This position supports licensed Professional Engineers in the coordination of all activities required to deliver Maintenance (M) Projects that includes both pre-construction and construction activities. Design support includes ensuring that current departmental policies, procedures, and design standards are incorporated into plans, specifications, and bid packages advertised for competitive bidding. Construction support includes proactively assisting and providing training to the maintenance sections to ensure construction Contract requirements are met and to facilitate the timely post-construction closeout of projects. Design and construction support also extends to maintenance water quality, roadside vegetation and other Maintenance efforts. Assists with the development and oversight of Task Orders for consultant services contracted in support of CDOT Maintenance water quality, roadside vegetation, M-Project, and other project delivery efforts.

Deicer Testing-
This position manages the CDOT Deicer Testing Program by developing and maintaining testing and deicer product contract documents. This includes coordination with the Maintenance Sections along with creating reports and monitoring test results for non-compliance to specifications.

CDOT Approved Products List-
In coordination with the Product Evaluation Coordinator (PEC) and following the guidance in PD 1401.1, assist with the management of the CDOT Approved Product List (APL) for CDOT Maintenance related products. This includes evaluating new products and compliance renewal of products currently listed/approved.

Maintenance Engineering Website-
Manages the units internal website, keeping information current and up to date by coordinating and communicating with the entire staff, ultimately sharing platforms to facilitate communication with Maintenance Sections.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, applies current engineering principles and theories, design specifications, and federal, state, and local design standards to develop safe, efficient, and economical project designs for Maintenance (M) Project;
  • Assists with the development and update of the Maintenance Project Guideline Manual. Utilizes the M-project manual, as built plan sets, and procurement manual to deliver projects;
  • For M-Projects, uses MicroStation to create plan sheets such as typical sections, title sheets, erosion control plan sheets, summary of approximate quantities, etc. Utilizes SAP, and PS&E applications such as ProjectWise and AASHTOWare to advertise projects for competitive bidding. Creates SAP project records;
  • Calculates quantities and makes recommendations related to project scope;
  • Organizes and coordinates Design Scoping Reviews (DSR) and combined Field Initial Review/Final Office Review (FIR/FOR) meetings; works with Environmental, Utility, ROW, Staff Bridge, and other specialty units to clear the project before advertisement; prepares project estimates and bid packages;
  • Coordinates the efforts and communicates with Maintenance, Region Engineering, temporary, consultant, and/or Contractor personnel to guide and manage design and construction project delivery for M-Projects and other Division of Maintenance & Operation projects;
  • Assists the units Environmental Protection Specialist in consultant management for contracts and associated Task Orders related to construction/maintenance activities for water quality, roadside vegetation, and other items. May also assist with other Maintenance Engineering consultant contracts and Task Orders;
  • Develops Master Contract documents in coordination with Region Business office;
  • Oversees the CDOT Deicer Testing Program for all winter snow and ice products;
  • Oversees the addition of Maintenance Specifications to the Approved Product List (APL) in coordination with CDOT Central Materials Lab. This position will coordinate the implementation of PD 1401.1 for all Maintenance sections;
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met
  • Occasional overnight travel throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
Minimum Qualifications

Experience Only:
Six (6) years of relevant experience in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, Materials Testing Management or an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.

OR

Education and Experience:

A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to six (6) years.
