Electrical Inspector

Enforce the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and the City electrical ordinances through examination of plans and onsite inspections of industrial, commercial and residential construction.

1. Inspect electrical installations during and upon completion of construction to ensure conformity with the applications, approved plans, and adopted codes.

2. Prepare reports and maintain records of daily inspection work.

3. Examine building plans as assigned to ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes. Recommend improvements and changes to plans and educate contractors or owners.

4. Receive and review applications and issue permits.

5. Receive and investigate complaints involving electrical wiring. Issue oral and/or written orders to comply with codes. Initiate legal action against violators as necessary.

6. Conduct inspections of fire-damaged structures and assist Sioux Falls Fire Rescue in the determination of electrical-related causes.

7. Receive and process applications for electrician licenses.

8. Defend interpretations and/or application of the National Electrical Code before the Electrical Board of Appeals and Examiners when appeals are filed against the City. Prepare and submit to the Electrical Board of Appeals and Examiners all records, documentation, and information relating to, or impacting, the appeal. Recommend revisions or amendments to City electrical code ordinances.

9. Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.

Graduation from high school or GED certification with a minimum of six (6) years experience as an electrician with two (2) of those years as a journeyman electrician in commercial, residential, and/or industrial electrical installations; or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid drivers license.

Must possess or be able to obtain electrical inspectors license from the South Dakota Electrical Commission within one year (12 months) of hire. An electrical inspector certification from the International Association of Electrical Inspectors or the International Code Council is desirable.

  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code Standards and City and state codes, laws, and regulations relating to electrical installations.

  • Knowledge of the methods and practices involved in construction, installation, maintenance, and operation of a variety of electrical systems, equipment, appliances, and standard testing devices.

  • Knowledge of possible defects and faults in electrical wiring and appliances and effective corrective measures.

  • Ability to read building construction plans and electrical specifications.

  • Skill in the use of computers, including laptops and related mobile equipment.

  • Ability to learn and understand complex and specialized software programs.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and tactful communication with public and staff.

  • Must have mobility and ability to perform field duties in various locations throughout the city.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
