Summary:

The Senior Project Engineer provides engineering expertise and leadership to complete tasks for Operations (manufacturing and production) projects related to Chemence’s adhesive and polymer products.

This work typically includes leadership of technical projects or ownership of the technical aspects of projects. Typical projects include implementation of new manufacturing equipment, implementation of new product production and manufacturing, improving the economic efficiencies of existing processes and equipment, addressing issues with components and materials used in these processes, proving regulatory compliance of processes, and identifying and implementing continuous improvement activities.

The Senior Project Engineer will work closely with other Chemence employees, including engineering, maintenance, manufacturing, packaging, quality, supply chain, process development, R&D and project management. The Senior Project Engineer typically works closely with vendors and contractors to complete project activities, often directing their work, and is expected to be Chemence’s point technical leader for assigned projects. The Senior Project Engineer will typically determine technical specifications for work to be completed by vendors and contractors, then monitor the progress of this work to ensure that the specifications are met.

Typically, the Senior Project Engineer:

  • Proposes, plans, coordinates and completes activities for design, construction, modification, and maintenance of equipment, machinery, and systems related to Chemence’s business operations.
  • Uses project management tools to plan and track work. Identifies risks, including technical risk to engineering projects.
  • Directs, monitors and follow-ups with vendors and contractors to ensure that project objectives are met and stay on-budget.
  • Communicates project and tasks progress, risks and issues promptly. May troubleshoot project and technical issues and resolve or recommend solutions.
  • Prepares technical and economic feasibility studies, initial concepts and engineering details for new equipment and systems, and for improving existing equipment and systems.
  • Review/prepare technical documents for initial concept analysis, detailed engineering and implementation, such as mechanical drawings, P&ID’s, PFDs, layouts, specifications, user requirements, maintenance plans, automation plans and work instructions.
  • Routinely presents project and technical up-dates to Chemence leadership.
  • Coordinates or leads process safety analysis (HAZOP’s, Prestart safety review and safety studies).
  • Provides input for and enforces internal safety requirements.
  • Leads and maintains standards and policies to reduce environmental, health, and safety risks in the facility.
  • Plans maintenance and engineering of plant buildings and coordinates requirements for new designs, surveys and maintenance schedules for equipment and machinery.
  • Prepares bid sheets and contracts for construction, equipment, and facilities acquisitions.
  • May oversee other engineers in testing newly installed or modified machines and equipment, to ensure fulfillment of contract specifications and engineering standards.
  • Develops or revises work instructions for equipment settings and operation. May train workers to ensure compliance with standards and to maximize quality and production efficiency.
  • Defines inspection and maintenance methods for machines and equipment to ensure specific operational performance and optimum utilization.
  • Studies existing operations to identify continuous improvement activities. Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product. Completes work to implement such improvements.
  • Performs root cause analysis and resolves equipment problems or assists others with solving operational issues, such as reducing production rejects and reducing machine down-time.
  • Assists with training employees to perform new equipment operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Industrial, Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years related industrial work experience, or 3 years with a graduate degree.
  • Experience with or education regarding either automated systems and robotics or chemical processes. This typically includes completion of several significant automated equipment projects or chemical process projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with vendors and internal customers to drive a project to completion.
  • Demonstrated computer experience, detailed oriented and responsible attitude.
  • Ability to write technical documents and communicate work requirements to other employees.
  • Project execution experience (required). Project management professional. (desirable)
  • Six Sigma Green Belt, Lean Training or similar post-college education (desirable).

Language Skills:

  • English required, bilingual (Spanish) a plus.

Physical Demands:

  • Position requires walking, standing for prolonged periods, occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. May frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

  • Non-temperature-controlled warehouse, non-temperature-controlled production floor, temperature-controlled office.
