What's You'll Do A Transportation Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for supervising and coordinating the maintenance operations of the Transportation Department. Responsibilities include assisting in the planning, directing, monitoring, developing, coordinating and implementing annual work plans and daily work activities with available resources to meet department goals and priorities, providing input and monitoring of operational budgets, and recommending capital equipment and capital improvement projects. Work is performed independently under the general direction of the Transportation Manager Maintenance Operations and is reviewed primarily through direct results. Duties & Responsibilities These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions. 1. Supervise and direct snow and ice removal operations to ensure safe roadways for the motoring public; Direct callout of crews, determine equipment and material need, monitor weather conditions, perform visual inspections. 2. Supervise and direct road maintenance, repair, and reconstruction projects; Prioritize and coordinate contractor schedules, assess product and material needs, determine cost, and assign personnel. 3. Supervise and direct trail and parking lot repair projects: Prioritize and coordinate contractor schedules, assess product and material needs, determine cost, and assign personnel. 4. Supervisee and direct work assignments for maintenance personnel on daily or project basis to meet established schedules. 5. Provide emergency response and coordination of work crews to emergency weather and flooding conditions, storm damage or hazardous waste spills. 6. Coordinate and collaborate maintenance functions with other groups within the Transportation Department, other County Departments, Minnesota Dept. of Transportation and municipalities, townships, governmental agencies, law enforcement officials, and taxpayers. 7. Personnel management to include performance reviews, interviewing and recommendation of applicants for employment, counsel's employees in disputes and conflicts, initiates and recommends disciplinary action if necessary, and training of new and existing employees in maintenance and construction methods, and use of tools and machinery. 8. Ensure work is performed to meet applicable local, State, and Federal environmental, DNR, and OSHA regulations. 9. Review and inspect work zone for safety compliance. 10. Manage Maintenance Dept. budget to ensure compliance with established guidelines. 11. Determine validity/justification and recommend action/priority on complaints/ requests from internal and external (taxpayers) customers. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Duties 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 are essential functions as well as regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment Knowledge of and ability to operate and direct operations of all types of light and heavy equipment. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to read and analyze multiple weather reports, software, and cell phone applications. Extensive knowledge of "state of the art" road construction, repairs, and materials. Extensive knowledge of "state of the art" ice and snow removal methods, procedures, and products. Knowledge of civil engineering practices and principles. Knowledge of surveying techniques for water drainage, and road bed corrections Extensive knowledge of erosion control and techniques. Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, County, and local laws, rules, codes relating to public works maintenance and road repair activity. Effective verbal and written communications. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage large and diverse work teams. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The supervisor works about 70% in the office setting and 30% in the field. The posture and movement requirement for this position are: sitting and reaching forward on a frequent basis and standing, walking, bending/ stooping, twisting, balancing, and reaching overhead on an occasional basis. The position may require lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds; however, anything over 75 pounds should be done as a team lift. The position requires: simple grasping and the bending & twisting of the arm on a continuous basis and fine finger coordination on a frequent basis. The Supervisor and Manager must have the ability to use their right foot and have a full range of head motion to drive and operate equipment. Exposures may include, but are not limited to changing weather conditions, uneven and/or slippery surfaces, dust, dirt, oil, grease, solvents, fumes, vibrations, noise, sharp edges, and all hazards associated with field and shop work. Position requires sensory demands of hearing, speech, near & far vision, color vision, tactile, and spatial perception.
