Job Description
Hoffman Steel Services is seeking a Project Engineer to join our team. This individual will be an integral, onsite member of the Engineering Department, supporting the full lifecycle of a hyper-scale data center construction project. The Project Engineer will play a vital role in championing on-site shop drawing review, schedule and delivery, quality efforts, supporting our affiliates, and collaborating with a broad range of project stakeholders.
As a front-line technical resource, you will work closely with design professionals, clients, trade contractors, and craftspeople to address complex coordination challenges. Your ability to identify, prevent, and resolve issues in the field is essential to ensuring the quality and success of this mission-critical project.
Reporting to the VP of Operations, the Project Engineer will coordinate with site leadership and cross-functional teams to manage day-to-day construction activities, oversee construction models and related documentation, and drive compliance across structural, CSA, and MEP scopes.
This is a fully onsite position based near Amarillo, TX, with active involvement in supporting our affiliates and project partners throughout the build. Responsibilities will include but may not be limited to the following:
- Champion on-site quality efforts and support Hoffman Construction teams and project stakeholders.
- Collaborate with design professionals, clients, trade contractors, and craftspeople to address complex coordination challenges.
- Identify, prevent, and resolve field issues to ensure project quality and success.
- Coordinate with site leadership and cross-functional teams to manage day-to-day construction activities.
- Oversee construction models and related documentation.
- Drive compliance across structural, CSA, and MEP scopes.
- Provide leadership to all Hoffman Construction and affiliate functions to support Safety, Quality, and Profitability.
- Coordinate and align teams to promote Hoffman Constructions unified vision and goals.
- Work closely with Hoffman Constructions engineers to ensure submission and approval of documentation before work starts.
- Manage and update tracking logs for submittal schedules and approval timelines to support project schedules.
- Collaborate with the Superintendent to create and maintain accurate pour breaks, updating as needed.
- Assist Superintendent and Project Manager with schedule management, development, and coordination.
- Provide miscellaneous estimating support.
- Ensure accurate quantity capture and timely submission of weekly claim sheets.
- Review project specifications and requirements, requesting mockups when necessary.
- Manage submittals (concrete accessories, , QA/QC plan, re-, rebar, safety plans), maintaining an up-to-date approved submittal log.
- Attend safety meetings, daily whiteboards, morning stretch & flex, and weekly scheduling meetings.
- Review Workplans and HRAs to identify critical activities in the field.
- Review contract drawings for accuracy and constructability, communicate concerns, and collaborate to resolve issues.
- Communicate professionally via email, RFIs, phone, and meetings.
- Review and submit detailed concrete coordination shop drawings, ensuring they are error-free.
- Coordinate with VDC Engineer and third-party detailers to resolve building model issues.
- Provide technical advising to field crews for issues or questions.
- Perform daily quality control and safety walks; document issues and work with field teams on corrections.
- Complete site observation reports during and after pours.
- Coordinate with third-party formwork companies on shop drawings, contract updates, and delivery scheduling.
- Coordinate with rebar subcontractors on shop drawings, contract updates, RFIs, and scheduling; ensure conformance and coordination with concrete shop drawings.
- Coordinate with miscellaneous metals suppliers on embed requirements and constructability; assist scheduling deliveries aligned with construction sequence.
- Ensure highest quality standards; submit and enforce quality control plans and track costs related to quality issues.
- Coordinate safety, quality, production, and schedule goals with Safety Director, General Superintendent, Project Manager, and Superintendent.
- Advocate leadership, innovation, planning, communication, and accountability to advance the Hoffman Construction culture.
Qualifications
We are looking for a flexible, detail-oriented team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks, produce quality work, and consistently meet deadlines. The successful candidate will possess:
Professional Experience and Education
- Minimum 2 years of construction QA/QC or field engineering experience supporting structural or heavy civil trades.
- Experience managing complex construction scopes involving structural, CSA, and MEP trades.
- Proven ability to identify, prevent, and resolve construction coordination issues.
- Experience supporting on-site quality assurance and control efforts.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with diverse project stakeholders including design professionals, clients, subcontractors, and craft teams.
- Strong organizational skills to manage submittal tracking and project documentation.
- Experience reviewing and interpreting project specifications and contract drawings.
Position Related Skills
- Familiarity with BIM coordination and VDC processes.
- Proficient in managing and reviewing submittals, shop drawings, and construction models.
- Strong communication skills across emails, RFIs, meetings, and phone interactions.
- Skilled at conducting quality control and safety inspections and reporting findings.
- Ability to support schedule development and coordination alongside superintendents and project managers.
- Competency with estimating support and quantity tracking.
- Strong commitment to safety and quality with knowledge of QA/QC practices and OSHA standards.
- Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced field environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with owners, tradespeople, subcontractors, and internal teams.
- Attention to detail in reviewing technical documents and drawings.
- Ability to remain calm and solution-oriented in high-pressure situations.
- Proficient in using project management and scheduling tools.
Valued Experience (Preferred but Not Required):
- Experience working on hyper-scale data center or other mission-critical facility construction projects.
- Prior involvement coordinating with third-party formwork, rebar, and miscellaneous metals suppliers.
- Familiarity with quality control plan development and cost tracking related to quality issues.
- Experience collaborating closely with VDC engineers and third-party detailers.
- Background in supporting estimating or quantity take-off efforts.
- Knowledge of advanced construction software platforms beyond basic project management tools.
- Previous exposure to fast-track construction environments requiring rapid issue resolution and coordination.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Standing/Walking/Sitting: Workday is a combination of being stationary and moving about the work location.
- Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites.
- Must be able to climb stairs, to ascend and descend ladders, scaffold, inspect confined or underground spaces.
- Hands/Arms: Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery. Frequently operates machinery and will use hand/fingers and legs to operate, activate, use, prepare, inspect, place, detect, and position materials.
- Sigh: Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus in an outdoor environment. Must be able to safely operate a vehicle with a valid drivers license. The work is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, reading print and digital documents.
- Hearing: Must be able to work in proximity to loud equipment more than 75% of the time. Must be able to wear hearing protection, as necessary. Often required to communicate with customers and co-workers in an office setting and on the job site.
- Speech: Ability to communicate laws, ordinances, plans, regulations, protocols, directives, and standard operating procedures related to project scope in English.
- Lift/Carry: Must have the ability to lift or manipulate fifty pounds to a height of three feet and carry or push it 50-100 feet.
- Bending/Twisting: Frequent.
- Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: Must be able to regularly position self in a kneeling, crouching or crawling position for purpose of examining project work.
- Must be able to physically access all areas and levels of construction site for work progress review.
- Work schedule must be flexible to allow for extended hours or off-shift work to accommodate changing construction schedule and sequences.
- Must use independent judgment, organizational and critical thinking skills to determine best method to accomplish desired results.
