About the Role:

This position oversees traffic signal design and operational functions for the City of Greensboro, supporting safe and efficient movement throughout the street network. The role involves engineering analysis, coordination with field staff, preparation of timing and design plans, and oversight of signal system hardware and software. It also plays a key role in the City's succession plan for the Signal Systems Supervisor Engineer position.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the design and operation of traffic signals across the City of Greensboro.
  • Prepares and certifies traffic signal design plans or prepare for engineering certification.
  • Develops and evaluates arterial signal timing plans, including conducting travel time and saturation flow studies.
  • Conducts traffic signal warrant studies to assess the need for new installations.
  • Coordinates with GDOT signal field technicians to ensure controllers execute programmed timing plans as intended.
  • Maintains and oversees the central traffic signal system computer and related software.
  • Coordinates with school safety staff to schedule the programming and operation of all school zone flashers within city limits.

What You Bring:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with 4 or more years of engineering experience in traffic signal timing and design
  • "OR" Associate's Degree with 6 or more years of engineering experience in traffic signal timing and design
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Experience with local, state, and federal design standards including Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
  • Experience using signal optimization software packages such as Passer or Synchro
  • Experience with operational parameters of 2070-based traffic signal controllers including time-based coordination capabilities
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports
  • Experience using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software to develop detailed design plans
  • Experience performing detailed GIS analysis using ESRI ArcMap
  • Valid NC Professional Engineer License
