Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the full journey level class within the HVAC Technician series. Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receives only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Supervision ReceivedReceives general supervision and work assignments from higher level staff.
Examination Process : A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The examination for this recruitment will be a written examination, weighted 100%, and will be used to place candidates on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.Written Test Date: Monday, August 25, 2025

Essential Functions:
- Installs and maintains the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for city-owned and leased facilities; identifies, troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs all HVAC equipment malfunctions; modifies, repairs and replaces variable air volume boxes, air handlers, heat pumps, condensing units, package units, thermostats, system controllers, duct work, and other equipment essential to the operation of HVAC systems.
- Performs regular inspections on air-conditioning units to ensure efficient operation.
- Performs regularly scheduled maintenance on heating and cooling units; calibrates thermostatic controls.
- Installs, repairs or replaces low and high pressure liquid lines.
- Monitors sensitive equipment rooms within city facilities to adjust HVAC equipment to prevent computer system malfunctions.
- Inspects and observes pressure of liquids and vapor with instrumentation to ensure efficient operation of units and makes necessary adjustments; inspects and services refrigeration equipment including refrigerators and ice machines.
- Maintains the chilled and hot water supply systems.
- Adjusts and maintains internal electrical and electronic control systems; cleans coils and blowers and checks motors and belt tensions.
- Assembles and installs metal duct work.
- Assists in planning and designing new installations of heating and air-conditioning systems; estimates time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisitions materials as required.

- Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Responds to emergencies during evening and weekends.
- Performs minor non-structural welding fabrication and installation projects.

Experience:
Two years of increasingly responsible journey-level heating and air-conditioning experience.
Training:
Equivalent to graduation from high school, plus additional specialized training in heating and air-conditioning or a closely related field.
Licenses and Certifications:
Completion of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor within six months of the date of appointment. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification.
Possession of a valid, appropriate driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of an EPA Refrigerant Technician Universal certification on the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of a City of Las Vegas fork lift certificate within six months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of an appropriate City of Las Vegas aerial lift certificate within six months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
