Under occasional supervision, performs responsible, skilled work to operate heavy equipment in the maintenance of City parks and facilities. Assists in supervising the work of subordinate equipment operators and maintenance workers. Performs related work as required. Reports to the Supervisor or designee.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Operates a backhoe, front end loader, grader, track hoe, tractor / mower, bobcat, tillers, cherry picker, clam truck, and other equipment as needed in the construction and maintenance of City parks, ballfields, medians, and other public grounds.
  • Uses carpentry and masonry tools, landscaping tools, and various other hand and power tools.
  • Assists in the construction of new park facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage construction, and foundation work.
  • Oversees and participates in the preparation of athletic fields for play.
  • Oversees and assists in the mowing of lawns, ball fields and other open spaces; seeding, fertilization, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering and pest and weed control functions.
  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  • Assists in inspecting parks and facilities and determining maintenance / repair requirements.
  • Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs and events; prepares facilities for recreational use.
  • Inspects assigned equipment/vehicles for safety; performs equipment maintenance and repair work as necessary. Exercises care and safety in the use of assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Prepares and submits various logs, records and reports as required.
  • Assists in supervising the work of subordinate equipment operators and maintenance workers; supervisory duties include instructing, planning work, assigning and reviewing work, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, allocating personnel and acting on employee problems. Offers training, advice and assistance as needed.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other department supervisors, other City personnel, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by three to five years of experience in heavy equipment operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid state Class "A" CDL license with proper endorsements.
  • Must have a limited certification of urban fertilizer applicator or obtain within four (4) months of hire.

  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the general public and colleagues.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires light physical effort including lifting up to 25 pounds. May require occasional crouching, kneeling, bending, or stooping. Frequent periods of walking may be required.
