Building Plans Examiner I- $33.92/Hourly

Technical work in the review and examination of construction plans for compliance with Florida Building Code and other applicable codes, Statutes and ordinances. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City and its Building Department.

Building Plans Examiner II-$35.62/Hourly

Responsible technical work in the review and examination of commercial and residential construction plans for compliance with Florida Building Code and other applicable codes, statutes and ordinances. Authority for broader scope of reviews with two (2) trade certifications. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City and its Building Department.

Building Plans Examiner III-$37.40/Hourly

Responsible technical work in the review and examination of commercial and residential construction plans for compliance with Florida Building Code and other applicable codes, statutes and ordinances. Authority for broader scope of reviews with three (3) trade certifications. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City and its Building Department.

Building Plans Examiner IV-$ 39.27/Hourly

Responsible technical work in the review and examination of commercial and residential construction plans for compliance with Florida Building Code and other applicable codes, statutes and ordinances. Authority for broader scope of reviews with four (4) or more trades or Residential Combination certification. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City and its Building Department.The following duties are illustrative for this position. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Reviews plans and applications in accordance with applicable codes.
  • Coordinates and routes reviews to Fire Marshal.
  • Prepares comments for code deficiencies.
  • Calculates fees in accordance with approved fee schedules.
  • Attends meetings with staff, engineers, architects, and contractors.
  • Maintains proficiency with code changes and ordinances.
  • Tracks and maintains required continuing education (CEU) requirements for licensure in accordance with state and department policy.
  • Confers with contractors, developers, or public to explain corrective actions necessary for compliance with building codes.
  • Provides high level of customer service to internal and external customers. Accomplishes customer service goals and department expectations of customer service excellence.
  • Reads and interprets plans, specifications, correspondence, and related construction documents.
  • Assist in emergency response measures, as needed.
  • Accesses, inputs and retrieves information from a computer.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Building Plans Examiner I-

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Five (5) years' experience in construction required. Two years (2) in commercial construction, design, or inspections of buildings as a supervisor or contractor required.

Building Plans Examiner II-

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Six (6) years' experience in construction required. Two years (2) in commercial construction, design, or inspections of buildings as supervisor or contractor required.

Building Plans Examiner III-

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Seven (7) years' experience in construction required. Two years (2) in commercial construction, design, or inspections of buildings as supervisor or contractor required.

Building Plans Examiner IV-

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Eight (8) years' experience in construction required. Two years (2) in commercial construction, design, or inspections of buildings as supervisor or contractor required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License and maintenance of a clean driving record required.

Building Plans Examiner I-

Possession and maintenance of one (1) State of Florida-mandated building plans examiner certification or the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months from date of hire.

Building Plans Examiner II-

Possession and maintenance of two (2) State of Florida-mandated building plans examiner certifications or the ability to obtain certifications required within twelve (12) months from date of hire.

Building Plans Examiner III-

Possession and maintenance of three (3) State of Florida-mandated building plans examiner certifications or the ability to obtain certifications within twelve (12) months from date of hire.

Building Plans Examiner IV-

Possession and maintenance of four (4) State of Florida-mandated building plans examiner certifications or residential combination certification, or the ability to obtain certifications within twelve (12) months from date of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of building construction.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of building codes.
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling, and punctuation in order to prepare and compose results of inspections.
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans, site plans, development plans and zoning maps.
  • Knowledge of commercial occupancy classifications and special occupancies, and the applicable code requirements for each.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex commercial and residential building plans and specifications.
  • Ability to complete thorough reviews of commercial plans.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to interpret technical designs and blueprints.
  • Ability to enforce building codes.
  • Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.
