Description
Performs a variety of working level, skilled and technical duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of city street, irrigation, geothermal-water and sewer systems.
Essential Duties
Responds to emergency calls twenty-four hours a day; assists to determine necessary personnel and materials needed to resolve problems; assists to maintain daily records of all work performed.
Operates specialized heavy equipment such as single & tandem axle dump trucks, road graders, front-end loaders, backhoe, bucket trucks, snow plow and other similar equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of various street department projects and sites; operates light equipment such as sweepers, mowers, street vacuum, rollers, cement mixers, pick-ups, tractors, spreaders, and various hand and power tools as needed.
Transports and deposits various construction materials such as sand, salt, gravel, dirt, etc.; performs hot mix\ patching, storm drain cleaning, repair and construction, snow and ice control, gravel street maintenance, street, sweeping, cold mix patching, debris collection, etc.; participates in the installation and maintenance of street and road signs according to established federal guidelines.
Provides field support and services related to sanitation operations; may perform as a member of a maintenance crew installing and repairing lines; may perform maintenance work on wells.
Provides field support and services related to geothermal operations; may perform as a member of a maintenance crew installing and repairing lines; may perform maintenance work on wells.
Performs seasonal water management duties; performs general repair and cleaning of ditches and ditch banks; removes obstructions from water grates; replace broken or damaged pipes and catch basins; participates in flood control projects for management and prevention; assists with projects to minimize flooding during flood season and peak flows throughout the town.
Performs general maintenance of roadways and access avenues into and through the cemetery properties; performs snow removal in winter seasons; opens and closes graves, may perform general assistance and provide information to the public.
Checks and services assigned equipment; performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs; reports mechanical problems to the shop for repair; operates a variety of hand and power tools in performing general maintenance of vehicles and equipment; may assist in the fabrication of equipment parts.
Performs duties with due regard for personal safety, that of other employees and the public; assists in training subordinates in proper safety practices; performs as a flagger when assigned to assure safety while working on highways.
Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
High School diploma or GED Certificate and two (2) years of experience performing above or related duties; OR, an equivalent combination of education and experience to provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of operating basic manual and power tools; the standard practices, methods, materials and tools necessary for occupational hazards and safety precautions of trench work construction and maintenance work; hazards common to heavy equipment operation; interpersonal communication skills.
Skill in operation of medium and heavy equipment.
Ability to operate heavy equipment of various kinds under varying conditions; make minor repairs on assigned vehicles, perform heavy physical labor; develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, elected officials, local agencies and the general public; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; work from blueprints; tolerate weather extremes in the work environment; perform basic mathematical computations in reading and using various meters, gauges and related devices; use of a personal computer and software applications.
