Construction Inspector II (Civil) - EXAM

Under direction, is responsible for supervising construction and maintenance inspectors in the field or coordinating inspection related services provided by outside contractors, such as testing and surveying; performs related duties as required. (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
  • Interprets plans and specifications;
  • Recommends minor changes in plans during construction as required;
  • Inspects construction materials in the field for conformance to specifications;
  • Supervises hydrostatic tests of completed water lines;
  • Serves as coordinator and liaison between project engineer and contractor;
  • Inspects new street and alley construction, bridges, water tanks, structures, guardrail installation, sewer and water lines, and street lights for conformance to plans and specifications;
  • Inspects a variety of new construction projects for conformance to plans, standard drawing, and specifications;
  • Investigates complaints;
  • Inspects sub-grade for street work after final grading, pavement constructed with Portland cement concrete or asphaltic concrete, curb, and gutter construction, drain tile installation, curing methods of concrete, excavation sites, and embankment for grading, slope, and density;
  • Prepares reports and maintains records; performs final inspections of work;
  • Assists construction inspectors with difficult or complex field investigations;
  • May supervise and train inspectors in the field;
  • May coordinate activities of support services, such as testing or survey, provided for City inspection;
  • May assign construction inspectors to jobs based on project scope and inspector's knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Completion of the twelfth school grade and five (5) years of experience in asphalt or concrete work in the construction of streets, roadways, bridges, large parking areas; or in laying sewer pipe or main water lines, testing of concrete, street light construction, or large water tank construction. Possession of an American Concrete Institute (ACI) technician(s) license may be necessary to perform certain types of inspection or supervisory duties. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the twelfth grade completion requirement.

Possession of a valid drivers license.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a computerized exam weighted 100% covering Supervision, Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Safety, Construction, Reading Specs and Blueprints, Engineering and Surveying, Visualization, and Outlook and Excel 2016/2019.

Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
