Join our team as an Operator where you'll play a critical role in restoring and maintaining reclaimed areas, Superfund stormwater infrastructure, and the Butte Mine Waste Repository. Your work will directly contribute to environmental sustainability and community health, making a positive impact through every task you undertake.
This is responsible work involving the inspection, excavation, replacement or repair, and cleaning of reclaimed areas and Superfund stormwater infrastructure and storm drains in the City-County. The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the Reclamation Department Operations Manager and Reclamation Department Director, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with the supervisor, other Reclamation department employees, and the general public.This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow and the Local Union No. 400, of the International Union of Operating Engineers.
- Performs preventive maintenance and repair to reclaimed sites, Superfund stormwater infrastructure, storm sewer lines, and Butte Mine Waste Repository
- Inspects reclaimed sites and stormwater infrastructure for problems and schedules maintenance or repairs work as required.
- Cleans and retrenches ditches.
- Reads blueprints and maps to locate sites, infrastructure, and site deficiencies.
- Excavates areas of exposed mine waste and imports backfill material to ensure an effective cap within reclaimed sites
- Operation of vacuum truck to remove sediment and debris from Superfund stormwater structures.
- Travels from one project to another as workloads and situations require.
- Coordinates the use of available equipment to ensure maximum utility and effectiveness.
- Checks each project for progress and for conformance with work plans, making changes in work plans as necessary.
- Receives requests for emergency and unscheduled work and responds on call.
- Performs clean-up operations after rain, wind and snowstorms, including the removal of debris and snow.
- Maintains time and materials records.
- Keeps records and prepares and submits reports to the Operations Manager.
- Exercises universal precautions when working in and around historic mine waste and other contaminated materials.
- Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested and authorized.
- Performs related work as required.
- Performs all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner. Specifically, complying with the Health & Safety Program; maintaining work areas in a safe and orderly manner; identifying and reporting unsafe conditions; reporting all accidents; wearing required personal protective equipment; and attending safety-related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc.
- Performs all duties and work assignments in compliance with project quality requirements.
- Acts responsibly and ethically, and in conformance with generally accepted business, occupational, and professional standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Good knowledge of the practices, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance of reclaimed areas and Superfund stormwater infrastructure.
- Good knowledge of the layout of the City-Countys systems of streets, reclaimed sites, stormwater infrastructure and the current state of maintenance and repair of each system.
- Good knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of excavators, skid steer, vacuum truck, backhoe, and other equipment used in the repair and maintenance of reclaimed sites and stormwater infrastructure.
- Good knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in the maintenance and repair of reclaimed sites and stormwater infrastructure.
- Good knowledge of capping and revegetation procedures for reclaimed sites
- Good knowledge of water drainage principles and practices.
- Some knowledge of traffic safety and laws.
- Good knowledge of repairing of various subsidence issues
- Ability to communicate well with supervisors, employee and the general.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisory personnel, and the public.
- Ability to use logical thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.
- Ability to perform a wide variety of tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
- Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
- Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
Acceptable Experience and Training
- Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response 40-hour Certification, or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
- Graduation from high school; and
- Some construction experience preferred; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Required Special Qualifications
- Requires a CDL class B Drivers License issued by the State of Montana.
- Pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screen and register with the Federal Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance. See below.
2.08.010 Residence during employment . From and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow. (Ord. 85 § 1, 1979)
