The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Professional Engineer to join our team as a Field Engineer (Engineer III) with our Region Three team based in Orem, Utah.
Principal Duties
UDOT construction crews have a critical role in overseeing and managing various aspects of transportation construction projects, ensuring quality, timeliness, and adherence to plans and specifications. As a Field Engineer, you will be a vital part of this team assisting the Resident Engineer in management of personnel and budgets. Some of your responsibilities will include:
  • Assisting the team with personnel management, work schedules, project budgets, reporting, risk assessment, and crew assets.
  • Monitoring construction contracts.
  • Collaborating with a team to meet quality, scope, schedule, budget, and safety requirements, including Traffic Control, on assigned projects.
  • Maintaining a strong field presence to gain firsthand knowledge of all ongoing project activities.
  • Providing engineering field support and problem solving expertise throughout construction.
  • Tracking and reviewing product submittals for technical compliance.
  • Developing complex estimates, writing or drafting technical reports and analysis, and conducting research for formal contract modifications (change orders).
  • Assisting in training field personnel on proper inspection and contract enforcement, including reviewing field documentation and calculations for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assisting with material testing, interpreting and analyzing test results, and calculating incentives or penalties based on results.
  • Working with stakeholders (cities, utility owners, the public, etc.) potentially affected by projects.
  • Developing the knowledge and skills to be promoted to other positions within the Department.

Minimum Qualifications
Engineer III - Full Salary Range $37.46 - $60.77
The qualified candidate for this position as an Engineer III will have:
  • An active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah.
  • Prior experience in administering heavy civil construction projects and reviewing plans and specifications for constructability.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and persuasively.
  • An understanding of contract law.
  • Experience working with the public and contractors.
  • Excellent understanding of the UDOT partnering process and have a proven ability to develop good relations with others.
  • Excellent skills in identifying and solving complex problems.
  • Self-motivation and an eagerness to learn.
  • The ability to mentor, train, and lead others.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Valid Utah driver's license.

This position may be filled at the Engineer II level for applicants without a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah. See below for the qualifications and salary range:
Engineer I I - Full Salary range $34.39 - $57.57
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering; and
  • Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE); and
  • Completed at least two years of post-graduate engineering experience. ( A Master's degree, in a related field, may be considered for one-year post-graduate experience.)

Preference may be given to those who have at least 1 year of experience in the construction or materials field.

  • Working Conditions: This job may have risks which require the use of special safety precautions and equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working on a construction site, etc.
  • Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this job are moderate. Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
  • Department of Human Resource Management rules regarding promotions and transfers apply to current state employees.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director / Group Leader.
