Electrical Inspector/Plan Reviewer

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conducts field inspections of buildings under construction to ensure adherence to Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code
  • Reviews architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and site construction plans for conformance with applicable codes and policies
  • Performs technical and administrative duties to ensure that requirements of established building codes are met and processes applicable reporting
  • Provides technical resources and attends meetings with contractors, architects, residents, and building owners to resolve outstanding plan review and inspection issues
  • Performs analysis and research required to process and approve applications on computer-based plan review and permitting system
  • Interprets codes and assists contractors, engineers, architects, and the public
  • Conducts field inspections for code compliance of residential and commercial structures, including architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, gas, plumbing and other items
  • Reviews approved building plans and compares to actual construction to ensure compliance
  • Conducts inspections of existing structures and fire damaged buildings for hazardous conditions, structural failures, improper use, or complaints, being available for after-work hour recall on a rotating basis
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and at least 10 years of experience and general knowledge in electrical review and inspections, and at least one of the following areas: building construction, building, plumbing, or mechanical trades. Specific experience in electrical inspections and electrical plan review required.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must obtain certification as an electrical inspector, or combination inspector from the Virginia Board of Housing and Community Development within 12 months. Certification as an amusement inspector required within 24 months
  • Must work Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and on call as needed
