Full Year, Full Time, 2nd shift (rate includes base wage plus $2.00/hour shift premium)
Monday-Friday Schedule, 40 hours/week
General Summary:
The Bus Mechanic maintains school system vehicles in a safe, operating condition, in conformity with state and federal requirements. Bus Mechanics report to the Transportation Fleet Manager.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs minor and major repair duties for all vehicles, including those incorporating small engines.
Makes welding repairs, when necessary.
Performs diagnostic and repair work using all modern garage machinery and testing equipment.
Conducts routine preventive maintenance inspections for all vehicles.
Attends all required workshops and training sessions.
Picks up orders and receives parts, as required.
Orders parts when necessary in absence of the Transportation Fleet Manager or Lead Bus Mechanic.
Maintains required certification.
Drives school bus, as required.
Records all work performed, including hours and labor on forms provided.
Keeps a clean work area and assists in general garage cleaning.
Answers telephone and two-way radio, when necessary.
Performs road service.
Utilizes personal hand tools to perform service.
Maintains effective and cooperative work relationships with other mechanics, administrators, supervisors, drivers and students.
Completes and maintains required records and reports.
Performs all assigned duties in a manner which contributes to the safety and well being of the staff and buildings.
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
High school diploma or GED required, college or trade school classes preferred.
ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in at least four (4) related areas or State Certification.
Small engine repair experience and/or training and certification preferred.
Familiar with State Police Inspection procedures preferred.
Previous fleet experience preferred.
Must maintain a CDL physical.
Good driving record.
Must have or able to obtain within 90 days Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake, School Bus, and Passenger endorsements.
Mechanical experience with light/heavy duty vehicles.
Experience in the following specific areas: Tune-ups, fuel systems, brake-air and hydraulic, engine overhauls, electrical, front-end spring shocks and exhaust system.
Must have diagnostic and other testing skills.
Experience in diesel engines.
Possess and maintain a complete set of mechanic hand tools.
Possess good habits, character and attendance record.
Be neat in appearance.
Be able to speak, read and write at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance.
Be capable and demonstrate the establishment and maintenance of harmonious, effective relationships with staff, students, supervisors and co-workers.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Possess a willingness to learn new job skills and techniques.
