The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a skilled Hydraulics Design Engineer in Union Gap, WA. This position works independently and with a team of engineers and technicians to develop plans and specifications for roadway projects that conform to state standards and laws. This individual supports the Project Development Office with the technical and regulatory aspects associated with the field of Hydraulics. Provides hydraulic related support to ensure compliance with WSDOT runoff and drainage policies and environmental regulations including the Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Washington State Hydraulics Code, State Environmental Policy Act, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System and WSDOT policies and guidance.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Hydraulics Design Engineer will:
- Prepare Plans, Specification, and Estimate packages for projects assigned to the design team.
- Provide hydraulic related support to ensure compliance with WSDOT Hydraulic policies
- Prepare cost estimates. Including calculation of quantities.
- Prepare contract provisions including writing special provisions.
- Prepare information for, and coordinate with, specialty groups.
- Operate InRoads and MicroStation (OpenRoads) to create computer-aided engineering deliverables required for plan production.
- Review work of team members for completeness and accuracy.
- Create and/or assist with the development and management of design schedules to aid in delivering projects on time.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required :
- Bachelors degree in civil engineering or closely related field (a combination of education and experience may be substituted for a 4-year college degree) and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent as an entry level engineer in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or closely related field.
OR
- Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT).
OR
- A Masters degree with a major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or closely related fields.
In addition, the following are required:
- Possess a valid driver license.
- Possess a basic knowledge of hydraulic and hydrologic engineering principles.
- Ability to lift equipment up to 40 pounds individually or assist with lifting equipment up to 70 pounds.
- Ability to perform field work on various terrains and in varying climates for the purpose of obtaining field date.
- Ability to use a computer and learn software used for the design of projects: such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, MGS Flood, HEC-RAS, SRH-2D, MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads and other engineering software specific to WSDOT. e preparation of plans, specs, and estimates.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Knowledge and experience with exposure to design, hydraulics, construction, traffic, materials, program management, or other WSDOT related fields.
- Experience with hydraulic design, preparing technical reports, and communicating with other work groups.
- Experience with designing or inspecting construction of highway drainage and stormwater treatment systems.
- Advanced experience with computer software such as MGS Flood, HEC-RAS, SRH-2d, MicroStation, InRoads, Microsoft, Word, and Excel.
