About our opportunity: The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equipment Operator III within the Public Works Department - Stormwater Division. The ideal candidate will have experience operating a variety of heavy motorized equipment involved in the construction and maintenance of City infrastructure and will also have experience inspecting and preparing equipment for safe and proper operation. - Operating various equipment and vehicles for maintenance, repair, and construction projects of stormwater drainage systems and city roadways that involves digging, moving earth and materials, grading, loading, and performing similar tasks; equipment is primarily driven and operated on-site, but does require some driving over public roads; maneuvers in and around traffic.
- Driving dump trucks to haul materials to and from work sites
- Operates excavator, backhoe, and/or skid steer to perform skilled digging, trenching, or various other tasks for maintenance, upkeep, and construction of stormwater infrastructure and city roadways
- Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day: performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes refueling, greasing, and adding any needed fluids; cleans vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; and secures vehicle after use.
- Performs manual labor such as lifting, digging, moving. Utilizing tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, , tamps, power equipment and other small tools and equipment to be used in construction, maintenance, and repair projects of stormwater infrastructure and city roadways
- Performs other duties in support of City operations; provides coverage during special events and activities; responds to emergency and disaster situations; provides assistance to other employees or department; and performs other related duties as required.
- Follows established safety procedures: utilizes safety equipment and wears protective gear: monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Communicates with supervisor, co-workers, other City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, and ensure safety.

- Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), including appropriate endorsement(s) or must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the ability to obtain and maintain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire.
- Must possess and maintain Flagger and Work Zone Safety certification, or have the ability to obtain and maintain Flagger and Work Zone Safety certification within 6 months of hire.
