Under general direction the person in this position operates medium equipment in the performance of pipe laying, repair and roadway construction and maintenance. The Equipment Operator II operates tractors, backhoe and trenchers. Work is performed under established procedures with frequent inspections during process, and a final inspection of completed work. Perform related duties and· some supervisory activities.

Essential functions:
Operates backhoe to trench and fill lines.
Operates tractor with mower attachment to clear rights-of-way.
Operates front-end loader to load trucks and move dirt.
Drives dump truck to haul materials or equipment.
Checks each vehicle's fluid levels daily and replaces necessary fluids.
Checks vehicles, belts, batteries and tires.
Cleans equipment and the department shop.
Separates and stores tools and supplies.
Performs some manual labor such as; digging and moving of heavy objects.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Verbal skills to communicate information to supervisors and co-workers.
Writing skills to complete routine forms and reports.
Reading skills to understand operator manuals and instructions.
Basic math skills.
Skills in the operation, maintenance and safe use of medium equipment.
Knowledge of traffic regulation.
Knowledge of safety rules, including accident causation and prevention.
Ability to work independently with moderate supervision.
Knowledge of City rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
Possess a valid CDL operator's license or the ability to obtain license within one year of employment.
Willing to work overtime, or other non-standard hours when necessary.
Education and experience:
Must be a high school graduate or have equivalent experience.
Possess electrical experience.
Prefer 3 to 5 years of equipment operation experience.
Physical demands:
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing; lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds and crouching or crawling in restricted area.
Work environment:
Department is exposed to all types of weather conditions, insect bites or stings. Where required by the safety manual, the employee must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which consists of gloves, safety glasses, a hard hat and safety shoes. The work involves moderate risks, which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines.
