As a Wastewater Operator in Training (OIT), you'll be an essential member of a dedicated operations and maintenance team. Your role would involve monitoring, maintaining, and operating critical equipment to ensure safe and effective treatment of wastewater. By upholding regulatory requirements and exceeding standards, your work will help protect both public health and the environment.
Working collaboratively in a safety-focused, team-oriented setting, you will be based in Traverse City, MI. Your tasks will include operating and maintaining wastewater treatment plant systems, participating in weekly team meetings, and performing daily facility operations. You'll play a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance through preventive maintenance, accurate sampling and analysis, and consistent monitoring of plant operations and effluent quality.
Your responsibilities will also include diagnosing operational issues, making process control adjustments, and taking corrective actions as necessary. You'll prepare operational reports, collect and analyze samples, perform laboratory testing, determine appropriate chemical dosing, keep detailed operational logs, and carry out other assigned duties. Above all, you'll be committed to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for yourself and your colleagues.
Position will have on call responsibilities and will be required to work weekends as part of a rotation.

Onsite employees are expected to attend a Jacobs Workplace on a full-time basis, as required by the nature of their role.
Here's what you'll need
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Position will have on call responsibilities and will be required to work weekends as part of a rotation
- Valid driver's license with no major infractions
- Experience with general maintenance of engines, pumps, valves, motors; general maintenance experience in plumbing and electrical.
- Will obtain State of Michigan Wastewater Treatment Operator License Level D within 2 years.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and ability to accurately enter data into maintenance management and operational data collection systems.
Ideally, you'll also have:
- Certifications in welding, heavy equipment operation, lubrication, vibration analysis, asset management, or other related areas.
- Previous experience operating water or wastewater treatment plants
- Proficiency in computer software encompasses, but is not limited to, PLC and SCADA systems.
- Relevant coursework or training in biology, chemistry or water and environmental disciplines

The physical and environmental demands required to perform the essential duties of this position include standing, walking, sitting, coordination, balance and agility demands, which may include the ability to stoop, kneel, squat, grasp, reach, perform repetitive hand movements. Additional demands may involve a specific level of dexterity, grip strength, climbing and cardiorespiratory demands. The work areas may be indoor, outdoor, have loud noise, active machinery, high pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights and depths, fumes, air borne particles, noxious gases, and chemicals. The use of appropriate safety equipment will be mandatory in these areas to prevent hazardous contact.

The base salary range for this position is $35,300.00 to $52,000.00. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
