The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in District 04/Gang 520 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to Highway Foreman. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.
50% Operates the following heavy equipment, as needed:
- Asphalt Distributor (truck mounted)
- Backhoes
- Front end loaders
- Bucket/ladder trucks
- Cranes/draglines (lifting capacity >20,000 lbs but <40,000 lbs
- Dozers (<140 HP)
- Dump truck (tandem axle or trailer dump)
- Gradalls
- Hot mix pavers (<40 HP)
- Motor Graders
- Lowboys
- Milling machines (<90 HP)
- Road planer
- Road widener (<90 HP)
- Sewer Cleaners (truck mounted)
- Striping machines
- Sweepers
- Track hoes (excavators)
- Under bridge inspection units (trailer mounted)
40% Prior equipment operation, conducts routine visual/physical safety inspection of equipment: reports problems to supervisor/appropriate personnel and/or takes necessary corrective action whenever possible. This includes performing routine maintenance and making minor repairs to equipment as needed to keep equipment in clean, good and safe working order. Prepares any necessary paperwork (e.g., mileage, oil/gas usage, etc.) as directed. Performs various road maintenance duties and general labor duties such as flagging traffic, shoveling asphalt, cutting and removing trees, pothole patching, digging footings for setting concrete forms, placing traffic control devices, delivering, loading and unloading materials and/or hand tools, cleaning storm drains, mowing right-of-way, cleaning ditches and other road construction, etc. Operates tractors bush hogs, rollers and skid steer loaders with various attachments. Attends required training in accordance with the Department's Structured Training Program. May perform incidental repair and construction tasks such as installation of guard rail, fencing, the repair of the high tension cable barrier system, fender systems and cabling at moveable bridges and other structures May train and/or assist in training lower level operators or laborers.
5% Fulfills foreman duties in case of absence.
5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Compensation:
MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1:
Class D, Chauffers License will be required upon appointment. The starting salary for MEO-1 is $16.06/hourly; this job title receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for every hour worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.
MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 2:
Class A, Commercial Drivers License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. The starting salary for MEO-2 is $17.18/hourly; this job title receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for every hour worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.
MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1/HEAVY:
Class A, Commercial Drivers License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. The starting salary for MEO-1/HEAVY will be $21.05/hourly.
