ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Building Plans Examiner position at the City of Tucsons Planning and Development Services Department is responsible for conducting technical review of all levels of residential and commercial projects while serving as a liaison between the department, contractors, the public and all other stakeholders.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Section Manager. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs technical review of building and construction documents including reports for commercial, industrial, and residential projects. Utilizes a variety of systems and tools to efficiently review and manages construction plans to ensure compliance.
  • Approves or denies permits based on compliance with building codes, city ordinances, and other regulations. Notifies applicants on the process to revise and addresses non-compliance. Conducts final plan reviews.
  • Provides customer service and information to engineers, architects, contractors, governmental officials, utilities representatives and the public in matters relating to construction plans and code requirements.
  • Collaborates and assists building inspectors with field reviews when needed. Performs site reviews to identify potential construction difficulties due to existing items not reflected on construction plans.
  • Conducts research on the alternate products, materials, and methods of construction for compliance, and make recommendations to the building official.
  • Prepares reports and documentation to support enforcement actions or legal proceedings, if necessary.
  • Perform all other duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Bachelors degree.

Experience:
Five (5) years of directly related experience

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in Compliance, Construction and building Inspection, Electrical Systems, or Risk Management.

Experience in examining or preparing building plans for structural, life safety, electrical equipment and systems, or mechanical equipment and systems for integrity and compliance with building codes.

ICC (International Code Council) Plans Examiner Certification
Registered Engineer or Architectural License
Excellent written or oral communication skills
Customer service experience
Strong interpersonal communication skills
