The mechanic shop, as part of the Facilities Services department, services and maintains all vehicles, equipment and implements, and heavy equipment, used by Facilities Services and a variety of MSU departments.

Duties and Responsibilities

Major mechanical work includes adjust, repair, and replace engines, motors, drivetrain, suspension and steering, electrical/electronic systems, fuel systems, brake systems, heating and cooling systems, body controls systems, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems.Minor maintenance duties and repairs such as adjust, lubricate, change fluids and filters, replace engine and body accessories, and repair and replace tires.Requisition parts through Campus Stores and Outside Vendors.Estimate time and cost of services.Accurately complete service records.Assist Service Technician(s) and Mechanic(s) as required.Perform all major mechanical work on vehicles, trucks, trailers, implements, campus standby generators, large and small equipment and tools.Weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including fabrication of parts for vehicles and equipment.Participate in University Services Fleet and Equipment condition assessments.Perform all major mechanical work on mid to heavy trucks, diesel engines, tractors hydraulics and other specialty vehicles, equipment, and implementsPerform related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of mechanic/machinist trade.Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.Inspect, troubleshoot, adjust, maintain, and repair a variety of automotive (gasoline and diesel), agricultural, and specialized equipment.Estimate time and materials and maintain accurate records.General computer use.Organize and prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines.Must possess the following ASE Certifications:

ASE Master Automobile A1-A8,Medium-Heavy Duty Truck H2, S2 or T2, Diesel EnginesMedium-Heavy Duty Truck H4, S4 or T4, BrakesMedium-Heavy Duty Truck H5, S5 or T5, Suspension/ Steering

Demonstrated experience guiding and suggesting work methods, materials and practices to others in an effort to improve efficiency and maintenance of a fleet of vehicles.Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computerized diagnostic tools and repair software systems.Demonstrated welding skills on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including ability to fabricate of parts.Demonstrated ability in repairing heavy equipment.Demonstrated ability in diagnosing and repairing Medium-Heavy truck and Tractor Hydraulics.Mobile Air Conditioning Certification.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Demonstrated experience managing and maintaining an auto parts inventory program.Other certifications relevant to the positionOther certifications relevant to the position, e.g. additional ASE certifications including Medium-Heavy Truck 3, 6 and 7.Valid Montana state Commercial Driver's license, Class B,Type 2.

Physical Demands

Predominant work is performed in the mechanic shop and the yard, however inclement weather often results in difficult working conditions.The mechanic is subject to long periods of remaining in a stationary position and/or walking and exertion such as positioning self to bend, stretch, climb, reach and work under vehicles and equipment.This position requires the ability to frequently transport and move large, cumbersome, heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds.Work involves hazards associated with working around heavy vehicles and equipment such as power tools, welders, hydraulic lifts, and mowers, and working with oil, fuels, cleaning chemicals, etc.Subject to continual loud noise from shop air compressor and machine shop tools and equipment.This position must be able to safely and competently operate a variety of vehicles, large trucks, and small and large equipment.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.
