About the role

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to lead and contribute to the design, coordination, and execution of electrical projects for a wide range of clients. This role is ideal for a self-motivated, detail-oriented professional with at least 10 years of experience in Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls engineering-especially in an Engineering and Design Consulting environment.

Essential Functions

  • Develop project scopes of work, budgets, and schedules.
  • Design and specify low and medium-voltage transformers and Motor Control Centers (MCCs).
  • Plan and implement power distribution systems for industrial facilities.
  • Create one-line diagrams and technical specifications for LV, MV, and HV substations (up to 500kV).
  • Define and implement electrical area classifications and grounding system designs.
  • Design protection relay and PLC control cabinets.
  • Develop lighting plans and lightning protection systems.
  • Design network architectures for electrical systems.
  • Prepare detailed cable and conduit schedules with appropriate sizing.
  • Conduct power studies using SKM or ETAP software.
  • Generate and monitor design milestones, staffing schedules, and man-hour estimates.
  • Ensure design concepts are technically accurate and align with project requirements.
  • Create Engineering Change Requests and support continuous design improvement.
  • Research and evaluate engineering solutions for feasibility, cost, and scheduling.
  • Train, mentor, and guide junior engineers, designers, and technicians.
  • Generate technical specifications for electrical equipment and construction work.
  • Apply relevant engineering standards and ensure compliance with applicable codes.
  • Coordinate cross-disciplinary design efforts and resolve interface issues.
  • Support field technicians with commissioning and troubleshooting tasks, especially protection relays.
  • Analyze transformer monitoring system data (a strong plus).
  • Interpret P&IDs and translate into electrical design requirements.
  • Conduct detailed engineering calculations and analysis per department standards.
  • Perform coordination studies and arc flash analyses in line with safety codes.
  • Oversee preparation and review of engineering reports, studies, drawings, and calculations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of low, medium, and high-voltage power systems (up to 500kV).
  • Proficiency in SKM or ETAP for load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and coordination studies.
  • Experience designing MCCs, transformer systems, relay protection schemes, and control cabinets.
  • Skilled in preparing one-line diagrams, cable/conduit schedules, and grounding designs.
  • Familiarity with P&IDs and network architecture for control and monitoring systems.
  • Ability to perform detailed electrical calculations and interpret technical design data.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes and engineering standards.
  • Proficiency in electrical design and drafting tools; ability to assist drafters and review their work.
  • Experience in transformer monitoring systems and data analysis is a strong asset.
  • Excellent project planning, scheduling, and budget estimation capabilities.
  • Strong mentoring and leadership skills for developing junior team members.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (required)
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls engineering
  • Extensive background in Engineering and Design Consulting preferred
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required
  • Must currently reside in the Houston, TX area
  • Willingness to learn and grow within the role
