GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Instrument Controls Mechanic installs, repairs, maintains and adjusts indicating, recording, telemetering, and controlling instruments used to measure and control variables, such as pressure, flow, temperature, motion, force, and chemical composition.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS/DUTIES OF THE POSITION

  • Operate engines, boilers, and auxiliary equipment
  • Read gauges, meters, and charts to track boiler operations
  • Monitor boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels
  • Activate valves to change the amount of water, air, and fuel in boilers
  • Fire coal furnaces or feed boilers, using gas feeds or oil pumps
  • Inspect equipment to ensure that is operating efficiently
  • Record data and keep logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activity
  • Start up, regulate, repair, and shut down equipment
  • Monitor meters, gauges, and computerized controls to ensure equipment operates safely and within established limits
  • Must be able to use sophisticated electrical and electronic test equipment when servicing, troubleshooting, repairing, and monitoring heating, cooling, and ventilation systems
  • Regularly perform routine maintenance
  • Replace defective valves, gaskets, or bearings
  • Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring
  • Mount compressor and condenser units on platforms or floor, using hand tools
  • May fabricate, assemble, or install ductwork and chassis parts, using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment
  • Lubricate motors, bearings, and moving parts; replace as needed
  • Connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels, and connect control panels to power source
  • Install/replace air and water filters/ clean drain pans and drain lines to avoid overflows
  • May inject small amounts of refrigerant into compressor to test systems and add freon gas to build up operating pressure
  • Other general maintenance, housekeeping, plumbing, and electrical duties as required
  • Any and all other duties assigned by your Supervisor/Manager/Lead

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

  • EXPERIENCE: Three to five years' experience in HVAC equipment and controls maintenance. Repair in an industrial/commercial environment is preferred.
  • SKILLS:
  • Must have good communication skills, the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Ability to read blueprints, building plans and schematics as required
  • Must be able to read and comply with work orders concerning service, modification, or installation of equipment
  • The ability to use a variety of power tools, hand tools, and meters safely
  • ADDITIONAL:
  • Hands-on ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Required to work independently and with limited supervision.
  • Comply with all policies, safety guidelines, and procedures; follow all contract specifications and maintain compliance.
  • Must be able to maintain regular and acceptable attendance, follow directions, interact well with co-workers, understand and follow posted work rules/procedures.
  • Must have a government security clearance or ability to obtain upon hire.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

  • HS Diploma or GED required; Associates or Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field desired.
  • Universal HVAC Certification required
  • Universal Refrigerant License desired

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The work environment, while generally hazard free, may include some exposure to dust and varying temperatures. This position may require the individual to work both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. May require lifting up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Constant walking and standing for extended periods of time may be required. Reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, and balancing may be needed. Significant hand and finger dexterity is required, along with the ability to work in tight/confined spaces. In addition, the use of ladders may be required, which includes the ability to use/carry ladders, lift, and climb up to 30ft. in length.

WORK HOUR REQUIREMENT

This position is full time (40 hours per week) and may include some shift work including Saturdays and Sundays. Ability to work overtime as needed.
