TxDOT's Austin District Bridge Section is looking for a Transportation Engineer III, IV, or V, to join our team in Austin, TX. We are looking for a Licensed Professional Engineer with experience in bridge design and rehabilitation/maintenance. This position performs advance and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

This position is for ONE Transportation Engineer III, IV, or V. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Salary Plan/Grade:

Transportation Engineer III: B26 ($76,530.00 - $129,430.00/yearly)

Transportation Engineer IV: B27 ($84,182.00 - $142,374.00/yearly)

Transportation Engineer V: B28 ($92,600.00 - $156,612.00/yearly)

Minimum Salary: 76,530.00 Maximum Salary: 156,612.00

Pay Basis: Yearly FLSA Status: Exempt

Travel: Yes, 5 % of the Time

Position Description

This position performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for a Transportation Engineer III, IV or V include:

Designs highly complex bridge projects and performs specialized design.

Inspects structures for impact damage and construction problems and may design emergency shoring to prevent collapse of damaged structures.

Performs inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.

Rates and monitors load carrying capacities of bridges.

Recommends bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.

Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional essential duties for a Transportation Engineer IV include:

Coordinates and monitors consultant contracts related projects.

Maintains a critical bridge list and coordinates with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on critical findings involving state maintained bridges to have them posted, repaired or closed to the traveling public.

Recommends prioritization of bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.

Ensures compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.

Additional essential duties for a Transportation Engineer V include:

Assists district with bridge inspection-related matters.

Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, monitors the consultant's compliance with the terms of the contract, and prepares and delivers a written evaluation of the consultant's performance.

Performs highly complex structural analysis of bridge designs

Performs inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.

Performs and coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.

Performs highly advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.-

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

Transportation Engineer III:

6 YEARS in Transportation engineering or related engineering experience

Transportation Engineer IV:

7 YEARS in Transportation engineering or related engineering experience

Transportation Engineer V:

8 YEARS in Transportation engineering or related engineering experience

For All Levels:

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Licensed Prof Engineer*

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Bridge construction and evaluation methods, procedures and regulations

Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short-term and long-term deadlines

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects 10 lbs. or more.

Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers

Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes

Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
