Salary Range:

  • Field Engineer I: $135,200 annually
  • Field Engineer II: $174,720 annually

POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

KKCS is currently seeking a Field Engineer – Roadways (Assistant Resident Engineer) to support the oversight and inspection of transportation infrastructure projects at Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) . This full-time, onsite role will assist the Resident Engineer in delivering roadway, complete streets, ITS/traffic signals, and related construction components. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in public works construction, contract administration, stakeholder coordination, and field documentation. The position is Full-Time, Onsite (5 days/week), and in LAWA’s Los Angeles, CA (Project Office).

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support LAWA’s Construction Inspection Division and the City of Los Angeles with daily field inspections to verify contractor compliance with plans, specifications, and regulatory standards (e.g., Caltrans, City of LA, utility agreements).
  • Maintain checklists, coordinate field materials sampling/testing, and ensure compliance with QA/QC protocols.
  • Prepare and organize thorough project documentation: conformed drawings/specs, daily reports, quantity calculations, photos, punch-lists, and as-builts.
  • Review and process submittals, RFIs, field directives, change notices, and task orders.
  • Track contractor progress and support schedule reviews and coordination of upcoming work.
  • Enforce safety, traffic control, SWPPP, MMRP, and environmental compliance on site.
  • Support layout verification, construction staking, and payment item validation.
  • Assist with administrative requests such as Area Shutdown Requests (ASRs), Utility Shutdown Requests (USRs), LAWA Impact Requests (LIRs), and lane closure applications.
  • Review and apply Caltrans and City of LA permits and encroachment requirements.
  • Attend pre-construction, progress, and closeout meetings, and assist with final acceptance walks.
  • Communicate clearly with LAWA project management, contractors, subcontractors, local agencies, and other stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Required Experience & Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in public infrastructure projects, preferably in transportation or utilities.
  • Familiarity with Caltrans standards, construction manuals, and City of LA specifications (Greenbook, Brown Book).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, and construction/project management platforms (PMWeb, Procore, Primavera, etc.).
  • Strong technical skills in reading construction plans, specs, and field verification.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and field documentation practices.
  • Valid California driver’s license and availability to travel to job sites.
  • Comfortable using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices for documentation and reporting.

Preferred:

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward PE license.
  • Experience working on federally funded or prevailing wage projects.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with alternative delivery methods such as design-build, progressive design-build, or CMGC.
  • Familiarity with LAWA Design and Construction Handbook and project delivery protocols.
