Chartered in 1834, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024, this 24/7/365 operation served 75.5 million riders on a system that stretches nearly 120 miles - from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison in Manhattan to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for protecting the interests of the LIRR related facilities, by providing mechanical/electrical/plumbing (MEP) engineering and technical expertise related to HVAC, motorized doors/gate equipment and controls, generators, UPS, ATS, chillers, BMS/SCADA systems, pumps etc. and ensuring they are maintained in a state of good repair and providing direction and oversight of 3rd party contractors performing maintenance, service/repairs, troubleshooting and installations in LIRR facilities and / or adjacent to the LIRR Right of Way. Provide technical expertise to assist the Assistant Engineers and other more senior team members with investigations, inspections, review of submittals, feedback on projects and with preparation of related correspondence and reports. The incumbent should be available to work on a 24/7 basis. The Field Engineer will split time between the office and LIRR locations in the field, which include, but not limited to Penn Station, Grand Central Madison, Atlantic Terminal, West Side Yard, Arch Street Yard, Mid-Day Storage Yard, Vanderbilt Yard, and tunnel vent plants associated with GCM and east of MDSY. This requires flexibility to cover all LIRR locations from Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Nassau, and Suffolk counties as needed or anywhere in the LIRR Service territory at the direction of LIRR leadership.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate inspection, supervision, and direction of third-party maintenance contractors working on LIRR related infrastructure and equipment. Write detailed report of observations upon contractor's completion of work.
  • Perform any assigned inspections of the LIRR Facilities systems and equipment, including but not limited to HVAC/R equipment (chillers, motor controls, ventilation fan plants, duct furnaces, walk-in cold boxes/refrigerators, ductless split HVAC systems, cooling towers, boilers), motorized doors and security gates, motorized gate and door controls, LIRR facilities condition assessment. Write detailed report upon completion of inspection.
  • Inspect the daily operations of any assigned maintenance contracts to include facilities systems and any other special work which may be required. Assist the Assistant Engineers and other senior team members with the review of project submittals and preparing responses, review F/A estimates, review 3rd Party estimates, agreements, and utility mark out coordination as required. Prepare files, documents, and reports as per ISO 9001-2000 standard
  • Attend seminars related to professional field, LIRR training courses and any other approved continuing education programs. Impart technical knowledge to peers and colleagues throughout the Engineering Department.
  • Perform tasks as requested by senior management including, but not limited to, report writing, document review & response, off hour emergency inspection, support accident investigation and claims investigations.
  • Actively participate in creation and maintenance of a safe work environment following corporate and Engineering Department guidelines and safety policies. Lead by example. Ensure a safe working environment and adherence to guidelines of company safety policies and procedures, especially when third party contractors are working adjacent to LIRR Right of Way (ROW). REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A)

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related field required. An additional four years of demonstrated directly related, equivalent experience and education may be considered in lieu of the degree.
  • A minimum of 2 years professional experience inspecting infrastructure, either with engineering consultants and/or State/City agencies.
  • A minimum of 2 years professional experience supervising, directing, and communicating with 3rd party contractors
  • Must possess at a minimum of 3 years Commercial HVAC/R field experience as a technician.
  • Must be proficient in HVAC/R troubleshooting, inspections, testing, repairs, and controls.
  • Must possess a minimum of 3 years of experience as a technician working with various types of commercial motorized doors (roll-up, /folding, high speed and motorized gates).
  • Must be proficient in troubleshooting, inspections, testing, repairs, and controls.
  • Must possess a minimum of 3 years of experience with circuitry and electronics, including proficiency with controls, reading schematics, and troubleshooting.
  • Must possess knowledge and background required to carry out the activities of engineering principles and practices including facilities and infrastructure inspections.
  • Must possess effective oral & written communication and organizational skills with ability to write detailed inspection reports and coordinate with contractors and stakeholders.
  • Must possess proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and AutoCAD software.
  • Must possess an intimate knowledge of best practices and procedures of the HVAC/R industry and Facilities systems and equipment.
  • Must possess facilities systems background to recognize and analyze and provide solutions to problems.
  • Must possess knowledge of related contract specifications development and preparation of requisitions.
  • Must be able to read and interpret contract drawings and specifications, including reading and interpreting wiring diagrams and schematics.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with contractor personnel & document review skills.
  • Must be able to assist in coordination of the efforts of all LIRR personnel involved in projects.
  • Experience troubleshooting and servicing with specialized HVAC/R equipment, such as chillers, RTUs, motor controls, ventilation fan plants, duct furnaces, walk-in cold boxes/refrigerators, ductless split HVAC systems, cooling towers, boilers.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

B)

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical engineering Experience estimating quantities and duration.
  • Knowledge of LIRR system and operations.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment Limited electrician's license.
  • Possesses EPA license and HVAC Manufacturers' certifications Experience troubleshooting and servicing motor driven sliding gates and gate controller.
  • Knowledge of NFPA and NYS building codes, including codes that apply to HVAC/R equipment.

  • Actual salary offers may vary based on individual work experience. The annual salary range is subject to change and may be modified at the company's discretion.
