Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Hold key relationships with GC and Owners and work to expand, develop and build strong relationships
  • Develop and work with estimating team to build and foster customer relationships
  • Assess risk associated with various RFP and bid requests that are received daily
  • Define and continue existing estimating process with the goal to improve over time
  • Maintain bookings to match gross profit and labor expectations
  • Outgoing proposals meet customer expectations, general conditions and design specifications
  • Create a consistent and identical estimating process across sales, service and project departments
  • Lead, manage and hold accountable the department's performance and team
  • Develop positive relationships with coworkers, management, customers and vendors
  • Utilize company technology, methods and forms for a common estimating process
  • Review daily bid invites, select appropriate jobs for bid
  • Self-perform select bids but work with estimating team for take offs
  • Review weekly and monthly scorecards with individuals on the estimating team
  • Review estimator take offs, labor, subs, scope of work, prior to bid submission
  • Verify follow up on all bid events
  • Validate pricing as accurate, current and meets specs for each bid
  • Work with sales and service to assure all project bids are tracked and processed through departments
  • Perform turnover with project team including all quotes, scopes and documents
  • Follow upon post mortem project reviews with project management and finance
  • Assist projects and service departments with proposal requests
  • Attend walkthroughs when necessary
  • Ensure department is led, managed and accountable for performance
  • Ensure department receives high quality bid invites
  • Work to ensure more owner direct work, negotiated work and high-end user work is developed
  • Learn and understand the business, the processes, the customers and the employees
  • Work with management team to create an exceptional workplace culture
  • Ensure estimates are diligently performed, are accurate and risks are properly identified and costed
  • Ensure estimating software and processes are used correctly and regularly maintained for accuracy

Required Education/Experience:

  • 5+ years experience in a construction estimating role, mechanical - preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management or equivalent combinations of technical training and/or related experience.

Competencies:

  • Experience with end users, institutions, high-end customers
  • Understands the competitive nature of the business and associated risk of work
  • Understands project conditions, scope of work, drawings, systems, and specifications
  • Previous experience with formal estimating software system - preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of company procedures and estimating techniques plus industry standards, practices, and processes that impact the bid.
  • experience performing design build work and value engineering in a past employment role
  • Experience in commercial mechanical construction - preferred
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret drawings.
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise group work effort.
  • Ability to prepare complex proposals with minimum of supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with ability to speak clearly and persuasively.
  • Demonstrated group presentation skills, phone and e-mail etiquette.
  • Ability to use significant independent judgment.
  • Advanced Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of estimating software with strong proficiency and/or the ability to learn, understand, and train others
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Organizational, supervisory, and decision making/problem solving skills.

This position is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand, as necessary.

Work Environment

This job operates in both an office and a field environment. Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
