RTB Wastewater Assistant Superintendent

Working as part of the leadership team, you will provide high-level support to the Wastewater Superintendent by managing, directing, and supervising staff who operate all aspects of the facilities, including ensuring compliance with regulations from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). The staff have both operational and laboratory responsibilities, providing proactive and reactive maintenance to the mechanical and electrical equipment, as well as EGLE compliance sampling and reporting. This position is an at-will position (non-union) and reports to the Wastewater Superintendent of the Southeast Macomb Sanitary District (SEMSD). The position requires the performance of the following tasks: Assist in completing and managing the weekly staffing schedule. Direct the daily workload for the SEMSD staff. Oversee and assist with the operation, maintenance, and repairs to the SEMSD and Milk River Intercounty Drain Drainage District (MRIDDD) pump stations, retention treatment basin (RTB), sanitary sewers, flow meters, level sensors, site maintenance, and other equipment related to the sewer system. Manage staff, oversee and assist with the system operations during wet weather events to minimize RTB treated discharges into Lake St. Clair while ensuring safe levels in the sewer system to prevent basement backups. Investigate issues with system components, assist and coordinate with in-house repairs, or obtain quotes from vendors for repairs to the system. Oversee, manage, and continually develop the Asset Management Program, preventative maintenance systems, and maintenance schedules. Collaborate with consultants to oversee, manage, and continually develop the SCADA system and other system components. Create reports, spreadsheets, and other documents, and periodically attend meetings to present system and operational information to the SEMSD and the MRIDDD Boards. Periodically attend regional meetings and workgroups related to the sewer system. Manage and oversee the SEMSD and MRIDDD safety plan and employee certifications. Assist the Director in developing the budget, reports, reviewing invoices, maintaining digital documents, and addressing citizen inquiries and complaints as related to wastewater services. Provide training and guidance to employees on proper operating procedures, safety protocols, and maintenance tasks. Possibility of working holidays, weekends, afternoons, midnight, and/or weekends, especially during wet weather events. Ability to actively participate in field work at the facilities in coordination with the station operators. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED:

Possession of a High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED).

Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and an operable insured automobile for authorized travel.

Possession of a Class D Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification, or ability to obtain a Class D certification within 24 months of hire.

PREFERRED:

Associate's degree or higher.

Commercial Driver s License (CDL)

Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, computer systems, SCADA, and other equipment required to repair and operate the sewer system.

Confined Space Entry Certification

Proficient in digital file organization, Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet, Wonderware (SCADA), and other related software.

Five (5) years of experience working in an operating RTB facility, including two (2) years of administrative and/or supervisory responsibility.

SKILLS AND SPECIFICATIONS:

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with elected officials, directors, staff, union officials, and the public.

Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, and lift a minimum of seventy-five pounds.

Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

Must be able to work in high places and confined spaces.

Must be able to work with and responsibly manage toxic or caustic chemicals.

Must be able to work in below-ground areas repairing water and sewer equipment.
