Systems Design Engineer I

About the Role:

ATS Life Sciences Systems is looking for a highly motivated and detail-oriented Systems Design Engineer I to join our growing team. This role supports the Systems Design Team by assisting in the development and execution of custom automation solutions for life sciences applications. You'll work closely with senior engineers to bring automation concepts to life and eventually take the lead on smaller machine builds and replication projects ( $500K).

What You'll Do:

Proposal & Concept Development:

Support the design and analysis of machine concepts and system architecture.

Learn and understand customer processes to become the local expert in support of project design and integration.

Evaluate technical feasibility, risk, and develop risk mitigation plans (including prototyping, POP, vendor engagement).

Assist in preparing proposals, labor budgets, and compliance documentation.

Construct simple prototypes and bench trials using basic tools and material

Project Execution:

  • Present and implement concept technical risk assessments with the project team.
  • Coordinate with internal and external teams on design reviews and system integration.
  • Support acceptance testing and validation of custom third-party equipment.
  • Assist in debugging and troubleshooting during system integration.
  • Participate in problem-solving initiatives and continuous improvement activities.

Innovation & Technology Development:

  • Conduct research on emerging technologies and industry trends to improve designs.
  • Support proof-of-principle and validation of high-risk system components.
  • Collaborate on the development of engineering standards and new processes.

Customer Collaboration:

  • Support the Applications Engineering team during pre-sales and customer visits.
  • Act as a technical point of contact, ensuring clear and confident communication with customers and internal stakeholders.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Design/Engineering.
  • 1-2 years of automation experience (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of system-level mechanical/electrical design, robotics, controls, and material handling.
  • Hands-on experience with 2D/3D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and analytical thinking.
  • A team mindset and willingness to grow into a leadership role.
